I've seen this posted on Android forums and HTC forums, but not much on here, so I wanted to check and see if any other Eris users were having a similiar issue.
I received my Eris update on December 11th, and chose to update. It installed normally, and everything seemed fine. Two days later, the phone completely locked up while I was replying to a text. Literally nothing would work, no buttons or functions, and the screen stayed lit up and absolutely would not shut off for anything. I had to pull out the battery and turn the phone back on. After I did this, it restarted normally and didn't act up again for 2 more days. Then yesterday, I was checking my voicemail, and the phone's screen froze during the call. I couldn't hang up the call, and again had to pull the battery. Today, I received a text and could not unlock the screen (and no, the freezing has nothing to do with the new unlock method on the screen - absolutely no buttons will work when it freezes). I pulled the battery out yet again. I called Verizon and the tech said she hadn't heard about it. Called HTC and they hadn't heard about it either- and ironically, right after I hung up with HTC, the phone froze and I had to pull the battery yet again. Yet, I've seen it in numerous threads on numerous forums.
The freezing is clearly sporadic and has nothing to do with a certain application, as it's happened 4 times with 4 different applications being used. I got the Eris a little more than a month ago, and it never did this until the update. I am really not willing to do a factory reset, as it's just going back to the same software, which I think is really the issue here.
Has anyone else experienced this and/or been able to solve this issue?

Don't do a factory reset, it will NOT help.
That was the first thing I did to my daughter's Eris on Sunday when it happend.
It locked up again about 20 minutes later while I was playing with it.
I think the problem is a LOT more wide-spread than is being reported, it's just that a lot of people haven't YET experienced it, or haven't had it happen enough times to call or get online about the problem.
Either way, doing a factory reset will be a waste of your time.

I did the manual update via USB/zip and I've had 1 lockup since...yesterday I think. Also, just about 2 hours ago... the phone restarted on its own in my pocket. I don't have an impression that the update is causing this as I've had 1-2 of the same incidents since Nov 11 prior to the update..
I guess we'll all know in the next few days how widespread it really is.

What have you all done to remedy this issue? I've checked several online forums and aside from the battery draining problem, freezing is very prevalent among the Droid Eris.
Has anyone had any luck getting a replacement if you are within your 30 days?
I went to Verizon in Princeton NJ today and they flat out refused to replace it without witnessing a freeze even though I bought my Eris 2 weeks ago. The manager said I could leave the phone there for them to "troubleshoot until it freezes", or I could stay at the store and wait until it freezes and show somebody...is it just me, or does anybody else feel that this is absolutely terrible service?

My husband got his HTC Droid Eris 1 1/2 weeks ago. The phone has frozen up as described 4 times now. he has to pull the battery and restart it every time and there is no rhyme or reason to when it freezes. If anyone hears what the problem and solution are please post!

HTC and VZW just released an over the air update that addresses this specific problem. Mine's been freezing about once a week. Let's hope this cures it!

the update killed my phone. I lost Cell support, and it boots with lots of errors. Anyone else have this issue?
I shouldn't have upgraded this morning!

I would agree. Or try taking out the battery to reset it a few times.
The last update (december) made my Eris freeze up. But after pulling out the battery to reset a few times, it doesn't do it anymore.

I've had my phone since January 4th 2010 and it's frozen on my 3 times during the last week! The first two time I was able to unfreeze it by holding all the buttons down multiple times and fianlly it just unlocked. But today I had to take the battery out as so many people said they had to do.
This is rediculous that this issue hasn't been resolved yet! Have other people had such a hard time exhanging the phone in a Verizon store??!

Hey,
I already replied in another forum about how my Eris continuously freezes up (even after the latest update). Have been waiting for any kind of reply- but no one (from the company) has bothered...
It's way more than annoying now. It's become down-right frustrating. With the amount of money paid for the phone, you want to hope that your issue is addressed quickly, but that just doesn't seem to be the case. Calling the reps and talking to the ones in the store haven't helped at all either.
When will this issue be resolved once and for all??

I've had the Eris since 11/6 and it's locked up... maybe 3 times altogether; twice before the update and once after.
Have the users having this issue completely reset the device and re-formatted the micro-sd card? I dont think there's an issue with the core device, I think its all the crap-ware that people install. Dont forget, many of these crap-apps interact directly with the phones core software features.
1) Save all music, pics, etc to your PC (do not save the whole SD Card)
2) Do a soft reset
3) Format SD Card
You could just shutdown, pull the SDcard and format.... then put back in. The cell OS reads alot of data from the card, but will rebuild whatever is needed if you reformat.
You'll then have a like new OS. I bet it wont freeze up as much or at all... dont install any apps for a week or so.
