Nexus 6 Messenger

I have recently purchased the Nexus 6 and would like to send a group message.  I have created two groups and assigned individuals to that group however when I try to send a group message the group name that I created is not recognized.  Also the instructions that I have read says to select the "group tab" next to the "TO" but I don't see that icon that allows you to switch between text and numbers.

Have I missed a step?

You came to the right source for help.  Were you able to send group messages before? Are you sending messages on our network or over Wi-Fi?  Keep us posted so we can assist further.
