It all depends upon the manufacturer. Given that the most current Android OS is in the 7 range, chances are strong that any device still in the 5 range will be staying right where it is.
Verizon Wireless has a page that gives devices, OS and date of last update.
Android units are usually updated for two years. Windows mobile devices vary (although Microsoft has said 2019 is the end of the line for W10M). iPhones are supported longer.
Given the vast number of computers running Windows XP, Microsoft supported the OS for a very long time. Interestingly enough, some computers running XP are still being used today.

Dexman I read that you could upgrade (not updates) to android 6 if you are using 5 if and when they stop updating 5..? Kinda like the way win 10 is supposed to be now it just upgrades.
Thanks

If Google and LG wished to upgrade the device to Marshmallow, an update would be pushed to Verizon Wireless. While there are workarounds, officially, the lack of an update means that the end of the line has been reached.

Critical updates could be issued to patch major security holes. It is questionable if the phone will be receiving a new OS though.

I understand the importance of keeping your device up to date, vanigo. Although we cannot determine when a future software update will become available for the next Android version, you can stay in the loop with available updates here. https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/software-updates/?intcmp=vzwdom
Are you experiencing any issues with the latest security update to your phone?

Google has already discontinued security support for Android 5.1. The Google Play Services will still be updated through the Play Store for some time to come.

Same thing. Android 5.0+ is Lollipop and Google support has ended.

Google is the company which releases updates for Android and has stopped support for Android 5. Google Play is the app store on all android phones. Google Play Services is a Google app on your phone which updates the Google apps on your device.

does that mean that the apps will update to still use the non supported android 5 ?
the opposite of what happens on a computer when say vista was unsupported and then adobe and java and FF and Chrome etc would not work with vista?

I have devices running Android 4.0.4 and 4.1.1 and they are still getting some application updates and the Google Play Services is being updated. How much longer will Google continue to update the Play Services, I don't know.

Yes the phone part will still work. Application updates don't affect the phone functions.

Thanks Ann
so too summarize Android 5 will not upgrade to 6 or 7 at some point in the future like now android 5 will no longer be supported but it will still work as a cell phone but all your data ,contacts, pictures etc will not be on a updated secure device.
Do I have it correct now?
