I'm on my second HTC One with the same problem - nobody can hear me talking to them when I hold the phone normally. Speakerphone, bluetooth and wired headsets all work fine. I sat on hold with Verizon tech support for 45 mins on Saturday and my call was never answered. This is getting a little ridiculous now.
Has anyone had any success getting a non-HTC One replacement phone to solve this problem? I really don't want to sit on the phone with tech support while they make me do a factory reset on my phone, again, just to determine that it is indeed a hardware issue. Come on, Verizon, this is a known issue with the phone. Please help us out so we can use our phones!

I know your time is valuable, B44. We definitely want your device working properly! Did this start immediately after activation or did it start some time after? The HTC One has two microphones and it's fairly common for customers to accidently cover one or both with a case or even your hand. There's one on the bottom end next to the micro usb port and another on the back of the phone near the upper right hand corner. If you have a case on your phone, I'd like you to remove it and test the audio without it.

Thanks for the response. It has pretty much been going on the whole time.
I've tried removing the case and carefully holding the phone on the edges
so as not to block either of the microphones and the problem persists. The
same was true with the first one I had. I'd really just like to be able to
speak normally on the phone without having to switch it to speaker. I'm
afraid that if I get another HTC One it's going to have the same problem.

I appreciate the breakdown. I actually use the HTC One and I have not had any problems with the microphone. We would need to replace your phone with the same make and model.

ChaunceyM_VZW,
I love everything else about the phone but was just hoping it could be
replaced by a different model of similar value - like a Galaxy S4. However,
if there are no other options, then I'll have to give it a shot with
another HTC One. Is there any way to expedite the process so I don't have
to sit through the same troubleshooting steps with tech support again?
Thanks.

Think it's time to change phone companies having the same issues with the HTC one and prior phones before this one.

A device change could remedy the issue..

robind_vzw is a VzW employee, as evidenced by their user name and avatar.

I believe you're mistaken. Anyone can choose a user name ending in _vzw and save the verizon logo as their avatar. If it was actually someone from VZW, then their name would probably say "Verizon Wireless Customer Support" like all the others. AND they probably wouldn't ask for my phone number, full name and online password in a direct message. Seems a little fishy to me....

On this forum, only authorized Verizon Wireless employees can have a user name that ends with _vzw and only authorized Verizon Wireless employees can use the Verizon logo as their avatar. All the VzW reps use the generic Verizon Wireless Customer Support account to post on the forum, but they use their personal accounts, such as robind_vzw when they send Direct Messages.
Any time I call VzW Customer Support or engage in a chat session, I'm always asked to verify my phone number and billing password (not the on-line forum or My Verizon password) to ensure that I am who I say I am and that the account is mine.
If you are uncomfortable responding to the Direct Message sent by robind_vzw then you could call Customer Service instead regarding your issue.

From the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service ... "Authorized Verizon Wireless Employees are distinguished by the Rank of "Employee" and/or an official Verizon Wireless logo as an Avatar."

It can't be a faulty mic. The speakerphone uses the same mic as if you were on a normal call.

Tidbits,
I agree. Besides the fact that they use the same mic, it's unlikely that
it's faulty because it always works fine for the first 30 seconds or so and
then it fades out. Switching speakerphone on and then off again also fixes
the problem for a short period of time.

Seems like a software issue. Have you tried a factory reset and not installing anything or setting up any accounts and seeing if the problem persists. If it stops then something backup or application you are installing is causing conflicts.

I have tried that and I tried booting in safe mode. Neither solved the problem.

Maybe see and check with HTC to get the factory RUU and try reflashing the firmware.

I have the same issue and have tried everything! No troubleshooting has worked. I am now on my 5th 'Certified Like New' replacement and every replacement device has had the same microphone issue. It's a manufacturer's defect and Verizon won't allow switching for like devices - that would be a DREAM at this point... getting an alternate device. The only more extreme option I haven't tried is sending the phone directly to HTC - We have spoken on the phone and they would actually take your phone and fix it, but leave you without a phone for a period of weeks.
I agree - Verizon needs to own up to this pervasive issue.

HTC and the microphones they use I've found are as good as any other brand. Microphones will sometimes overload if you are a close or louder then normal talker & tend to shut down somewhat to prevent voice distortion. Try talking somewhat across the mic. and not to close and this may help you. I don't think you have a device problem but a normal smartphone issue that is common in most phones.

I'm having this problem now, too. Front mic stopped working. I have to use speakerphone, BT or a headset. Fine this morning, 3 years with the phone, and poof it just stopped on the next call.
The only thing I did in the middle was Amazon music with plugged into headphones, but that shouldn't be an issue, never was before. I rebooted, did safe mode, tried cleaning the little holes where the front mic is ...
I've always had a case so the thing looks new and has all my stuff on it, do I bring it to a Verizon store or what? Three years out, they probably charge for repairs, right? If so, its it worth it? (HTC One M8 gray)
