Calls from landline drops on cellphone after new 10-digit calling change

Since the switch to 1+ 10-digit dialing this week, I cannot receive calls on my cellphone from my landline.   Sometimes they go through but most times they don't.  It rings 2 times and drops.  If I answer quick enough, it connects for just a few seconds.

I can call other local numbers from my landline but not my cell or my husband's, both Verizon.  The landline is AT&T.

Calling each cell from the other cell works fine.

Any ideas?

Anyone else with the same problem?

Thanks.

Are the calls to your cell phone number from the landline ringing on the cell phone? Are calls from the cell phone to the landline number working as intended?

Have you rebooted both your cell phones since the change? Is your landline saved in the cell phones with the ten digit number?

Are calls from the landline to the cell phone number considered to be a local call where you only need the ten digits to dial it? Or is it considered long distance where you need 1+the ten digits?

Ann154,

Thanks for your advice and ideas.

The calls from the landline rang twice on either cellphone before dropping.  If we managed to answer quickly, the calls dropped after just a few seconds.

Calls worked fine from cellphones to landline and also from cellphone to cellphone.

We made sure both cellphones were updated with system and all apps then restarted them.

The landline is saved as the whole 10-digit number.

The calls are considered local and with the 10-digit requirement change on 10/24/21 rather than the previous 7-digit, they need to be dialed as 1+ 10-digit even though they are local.  Dialing without the "1" gives an error message.

Occasionally it does go through ok.

I called Verizon today.  They reset both cellphones from their end, then we powered off for 2 minutes.  The first try did not work, but then the following 5 tries to each cellphone worked, so we thought it got fixed.  We tried later and it's not working again.

The cellphones are both Samsung.

I have tried calling other local phone numbers from the landline and they go through fine.

So I am back to not knowing again.

Honestly, that's kind of odd to require adding the 1 in front of the ten digits even for local numbers. I've lived in locations where the full ten digits are required for 20+ years now and have never had a similar experience. The only time I need to dial 1+10 digits is on a landline to a number that isn't considered a local number especially if I'm calling to another state or to a different phone exchange group within the same area code.

Since you have checked the Verizon Wireless side, the issue might actually be with the landline side of the equation. Have you called AT&T about the problem?

Ann154,

Thanks again for your comments.

I, too, am confused about needing to dial 1.  Everything I read online warns about switching to 10-digit for local calls and says nothing about adding "1".  Yet when we try the call without the "1", it gives an error message about not completing as dialed!

I called AT&T and they told me to dial a "1".

AT&T will be coming out next week to check.  They told me to try to make sure it wasn't other problems first.

Another weird thing is that I can call other local calls from the landline without issues unless that is intermittent, too, and I am not catching it dropping.  So it seems that there is something wrong with the Verizon and AT&T combination and perhaps difficult to track down.

The Verizon person yesterday did say he had 1 other customer that had the same problem, so when it worked after he reset the cellphones, we thought it was fixed.  Last night it didn't work and a few minutes ago it did work.

Hopefully AT&T has a solution or whoever is changing the overall phone network is working out the bugs.

Are you sure you have to dial 1?  I am in western NY and we had the calling change here last sunday too.  We don't have to dial 1 in front of local calls just the area code now.  Find it strange where ever you are they require 1  too.  Mary

Mary,

Thank you for your comments.

I agree.  Adding the "1" for local calls seems strange, but we get an error message if we don't dial the "1".  Strangely, just the 7-digit dialing also occasionally goes through but also drops.  It was my understanding that the 7-digit call should not go through at all.

The AT&T person I talked to said to dial "1".  There is a chance he could be wrong and there is just something wrong with our landline hub for our area and it didn't get updated for the switch?  I am hoping the actual AT&T repair person has more insight next week.

We are in Michigan so you wouldn't think our dialing rules would be different than yours!

Thank you for letting me know about NY.  It gives me a little more thought that the landline might more likely be the problem.

This was in our local news weeks before it went into affect and the news sources made it clear just the area code.  Check local news sources to see what they were saying.  I don't have a home phone so no clue about at&t.

Ann & Mary,

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

The AT&T repairman said our whole neighborhood is having intermittent problems with the landline phones dropping outgoing calls.  It may take 3-4 days to find and fix the problem.

Regarding dialing "1" for local calls, he was unsure about whether or not we need to dial "1".  In the meantime, I found a Verizon list about the 10-digit calling and found that all states except portions of California and Illinois don't need to dial "1".  So the error message we get when we try to dial without the "1" is part of the problem.

Hopefully it will work in a few days.

Thanks again.
