Droid Bionic sync with Gmail contacts

We're seeing anomolies in sync with Gmail contacts.  A few contacts are not syncing at all, others are syncing, but with odd results.

If we have a contact 'Fred & Wilma Flintstone', with one email contact (Wilma@bedrock.toon), it shows on the Droid as Flintstone, Fred & Wilma.  If we add an email address for Fred (fred@slate.rock) to the contact (but not make a whole new contact), the contact shows only as Flintstone, Fred.  Any idea why this might be.

The non-syncing at all of some contacts has us totally stumped.

I don't know that I have a solution, but a bit more information might help someone who knows more about it than I do. Namely, does it matter whether you add new data (such as an e-mail address) on the phone or in Gmail online?

(PS. Love your sample names and addresses!)

Adding a contact on the phone syncs up to the Gmail contacts online satisfactorily (although I haven't tested different additions, like Fred & Wilma, vs. Barney)

Editing contacts on the phone syncs up somewhat.  Eg, I have Barney Rubble, and edit it to show Barney & Betty Rubble. In the notes, I put 'Bam-Bam'.  The edited note will show up, but the name change will not.

I'm resorting to the brute force method.  Deleting the contact entirely, and re-entering it.

It's sometimes possible to have greater control over contact edits in Gmail online. For instance, when editing a contact if you click in the name field, 3 dots appear after the input box. Clicking those dots takes you to a detailed dialog with boxes for prefix, first, middle, last, and suffix. Putting "Fred & Wilma" in the first name field helps make sure the contacts apps will parse it correctly. Some other fields also display the "...", meaning you can get a more detailed dialog.
