Droid DNA Problem, No SIM card error

Hi

I recently upgraded my device to a Droid DNA from HTC. Every so often I get an error message that there is no SIM card in the phone, and I lose the ability to receive or make calls. Usually restarting the device fixes this. I find it obnoxious that I need to restart each day.  Has anyone else been seeing this bug?

Thanks

tony

I had this issue once or twice a day when I got my DNA in early February. I scrubbed the sim card contacts using the piece of cloth that came with the screen protector. It's been working flawlessly for a month and a half now.

This has worked for me too... so far.  I'm super skeptical that it will stay fixed, but so far so good.

This is what I did...  I used a paper clip to eject the SIM card, and when I visually inspected the card, I noticed the gold surfaces had an uneven layer of very fine dirt on them that looked like it was clinging on with static electricity just like you see with a lot of home electronics.  I simply wiped the surfaces with my finger (not the best thing to use, but I was so frustrated, I didn't care), and I put the SIM card back in.  It's been working for a couple weeks now!  I'm hoping it lasts, but if not, I'll try cleaning it again.

If you think about it, it does make sense.  There is space around the SIM card tray door for dust/dirt to get in to the compartment.

Hmm... I wonder... If it is dust/dirt that is causing this for me, then I have something I am going to try the next time I clean it.  I am going to put a small piece of clear tape over the tray door after cleaning to keep the dirt out.

Just got my second sim card error, 5 days after my 1st. I just cleaned it and blew out the sim card slot. I had the assistance of out Computer Tech support team at work, so I know it was carefully removed, cleaned and re-inserted. I put a piece of clear tape over the sim slot. The Tech's agreed that that was worth a try and thought that if it was dirt, that the tape would probably solve the issue. They were not too concerned over the scratches on the sim card as they were not deep and even though they all agreed that the design probably isnt the best, the scratches are unavoidable but shouldn't be the issue. I'll keep updated as I go.

Thanks, strock2e30!

I'm interested to hear if you have any more problems after doing all that!  Keep us updated!

Thanks, strock2e30!  I still haven't had a problem either!

So it is looking to me like this is not a software problem, so can never be fixed by Verizon or HTC sending out a software update. (like people on here keep wasting their time complaining about)

It is more of a phone design flaw that, while annoying, can be worked around.  And now that I seem to have the problem under control, I think the phone is great.

I am having the same problem and Verizon Rep. said that HTC knows about the problem and chooses not to release an update yet.  Its a Verizon Cell phone with their name on it, so I would think that they should own some of the blame for this.

What do you think?

I'm on my second DNA. Same problems after a month of no troubles. It will go a week or two with no problems, then have issues three times in one day.  My workaround is to use an app called Signal Reset https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homer.signalreset&hl=en which both alerts me when I have no signal and then toggles airplane mode which usually automatically fixes the error within a few seconds to a few minutes.

It is unacceptable that Verizon/HTC has not issued a fix yet.

So, I posted back in January about this problem. Stopped into the store and replaced the SIM and was good for well over a month before it started again. My wife's DNA never did it UNTIL AFTER the update and now does it several times a week. Yesterday, it happened to me while I was on a call! I got insurance, but will NOT get another HTC, and am even considering ditching Verizon altogether. We'll see what happens.

End of life for the DNA, I doubt there will much more support for this phone. What a shame!

There was a new update on my phone today from Verizon.  The update is supposed to be for better recognition of the SIM card.  Hopefully this is the fix we have all been waiting for.  I haven't had a SIM card issue since the end of January (knock on wood) ever since I took it out and carefully re-seated the card in the tray being extra careful to seat the card perfectly in the tray.  I hope this fixes the problem.  Otherwise, I am very happy with my DNA phone.

I got the idea from a post on this thread of using tape. I taped the sim card to the sim card tray and then neatly trimmed the excess tape off, so that it will fit perfectly back in.  After doing this, I have not had a single error and it has been two months now. Prior to this fix, I received the error at least once to multiple times a day. Hope this works for you!

Well the latest update did not fix my problem.  After not getting the error since January my phone has been getting the SIM card not found error.  Sometimes it fixes itself (maybe that is what the update is for, to just reset the SIM card) but other times it is persistent and I need to reboot.  Oh well.

I just switched to Verizon from Sprint on 3/1/13.  I am a staunch supporter of Android, and HTC hardware.  So, there was little choice for me other than the DNA.  I really like this phone but the SIM card issue is borderline crippling.  I am really disappointed that HTC and/or Verizon would rush a product to market that has such a debilitating, widespread issue.  I have to believe that if we all have this problem it would not have been hard to find in beta testing.  Seeing as we have already had a software update that was supposed to fix the problem, I am starting to think they knew about it all along, and decided they would ignore it for release and try fixing it later.  Considering that the phone has been out for over 5 months (released 11/21/12 and its now 5/3/13), and most phones have a lifespan of 1-2 years, I think we can assume that quality is far from these companies top priority.  I personally would never consider an iPhone, but I can respect the fact that stability and dependability are two cornerstones that have created such a loyal fan base.

Now to step off my soap box.  I have a coworker who used to sell and service cell phones.  She said to try cleaning off the SIM card with a regular pencil eraser; this will clean off any waxy buildup that is known to occur, and cannot do any harm (worst case it won't do anything).  She also said to make sure I was on the LTE/CDMA network; it looks like the last update switched me to the global network.

I did these two things and so far, so good.  Before I did this, the phone would go straight to the error status and wouldn't even connect to the network.  It may be that I reseated the SIM card in the process, but I guess time will tell.

For the record, there are scratches on my SIM card, and this is the first time I have removed it.  I definitely think this is at least partly a hardware issue.  For all I know it may also be software related.

My apologies if someone has already posted this advise, I was not about to read through 15 pages of comments.  For the Record: VERIZON AND HTC, THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM, YOU SHOULD PROBABLY FIGURE OUT A WAY TO DEFINITIVELY FIX THIS!!!  HTC is a small company in an extremely competitive market, releasing shoddy products will NOT help you win market share (same goes to you too Verizon)!!!

I hope this helps some of you.  Like I said, it can only help, and cannot hurt.  Good luck to all of us!

I had the no SIM card a few times before the update, but it's begun to have it more now than before. It's the only issue I have thus far. Great phone when it's working.

I just got a message today that there is a new update for SIM card issues. This is a second update for SIM card issues. I haven't had any issues with my SIM card since I got my phone in December. I have no choice but to take the update or i'll keep getting the stupid pop up. I wish there was a way to not to accept the update.

Have had this issue since getting phone in DEC.  It is a FIRMWARE problem in the phone, not a sim card issue, and that last software update did not fix. Advise stop messing around with sim card seating, cleaning, and replacement and get Verizon to replace phone with a different handset. Heading to my verizon corporate store to demand this.

This is getting irritating. I had this problem all the time when I got my phone back in Feb. When the update came out to fix this, it worked until a few weeks ago. Today, I got the no sim card error a total of 6 times. If this issue doesn't get fixed, I will have to cancel my contract. I am tired of missing phone calls and other important things for hours a day because of this issue.

Same issue.  Got my phone in February, the problems started a month or so later.  On average it loses the SIM card 3 or 4 times per day, but it varies widely -- sometimes it will go a couple days without a problem and other days it happens over and over and over.  I am very frustrated.

I am having the same problem. In hindsight the Verizon employee kept trying to talk me into a different version of this phone; which now in reflection makes me think it is a well known error.  Why doesn't verizon step up and recall the bad sim cards?   Give us the option to go in and replace them?   I cannot even figure out how to take my back off the phone; so I keep shutting it down and rebooting which from this string does work. Which is where I am today; rebooted and no sim card error.  I paid $400.00 for the phone after my rebate; what a rip!
