Early Upgrade?

Ok, I have four lines of service on my account. (no data plans) Two of the lines are eligible for an equipment upgrade, neither being my phone (the primary).  My question is simple; I'd like to upgrade my phone to a smart phone with a data plan, but I still have 18 months to go for a discount.  Has anyone experienced something similar?  I'm wondering if since I'll be upgrading to a data plan, if I could get discount on the phone?

Primary line gets the big discount. However, I have to wonder if you could make one of the lines that is eligible the primary, get the phone (with discount) and switch back primary lines later?? I know you don't have to assign the new phone to the line that's being renewed, but again, only the primary line gets the fat discount. I don't know if that will actually work or not, but you could certainly try.

Primary lines get a bigger discount? I didn't know that. But then again, I'm not the primary on my account so I wouldn't know.

It seems like it would be so much of a hassle to switch the primary to another person and then switch it back later. Why don't you just use the upgrade from one of the other numbers? You'll still get a discount. It just won't be as big a discount as primary lines must get.

You can do what's called an alternate upgrade. You can use the upgrade eligibility on any phone on your account to upgrade your line. You get whatever discount that line is eligible for and the contract on that line is extended. I don't know if you can do this at authorized agents but you can do it at VZW corporate stores.
