Faint background ringing HTC DNA

Had my DNA almost two weeks....  Twice now, the phone will begin emitting a fairly weak ringing sound not similar to any of the ringtones installed.  Did a soft reset the first time and it stopped.  Placed a call the second time and it stopped.  No notifications, No alerts, etc.  Sifted through the screens did not see anything.  Was in a fairly poor coverage area the second time.   Any similar experiences or thoughts or .... Solution????!!!

Yup...after two of the DNA's that both did the same thing, and nobody being able to give us a fix for the problem, or even acknowledging that there WAS a problem, we ditched the DNA and went to something else.  Saved our sanity, so that's a great fix in my opinion!  The DNA has some really cool features, and if it weren't for the ringing problem, would be a fantastic piece of equipment, but since it does have that glitch, we couldn't see our way clear to keep using it.

Sounds like a plan to me. Mine just started up again. Very frustrating.

My phone just started doing this tonight, after having it for 8 months.  Interesting enough I also downloaded HTC Sync for the first time tonight and synchronized the phone.  It was shortly after doing this action that the phone started the faint ring tone through the ear piece.  I have had the Facebook app loaded right from the start, and quick boot, and the phone has never done this until tonight.  Based on this fact, I am inclined to think that it is related to the HTC Sync.  I have all the same symptoms as you all call out above: keeps ringing even as shutting down, pressing the "on" button while the phone is off causes it to ring 2 to 4 times, it will ring while booting up, and will not stop until a call is placed.  On another note, I am very frustrated with the phone telling me there is no SIM card, when of course there is.  It has even decided to tell me this in the middle of a phone call (disconnects the call).  I have to reboot it to fix this.  It also frequently loses the ability to know where it is for the local weather.  Reboot fixes this too.  I have always liked my Droid phones, but this one is really driving me nuts.

I have had the same problem with a faint ring three times. The phone is about 3 weeks old. The ring is loud enough to hear in my pocket in a quiet environment. It stops if the phone is powered off but resumes when it is turned back on. Receiving a call stops it. I have not tried sending a call yet. It does not appear to be related to the phone heating, a low battery, or a weak signal. I cannot associate with the installation of any software. It seems very similar to the many descriptions in this thread. I hope Verizon support figures it out.

I had it happen twice this weekend and I called tech support again. Now they are saying its my SIM card and want me to take my phone to a store to have it replaced. Now I am convinced that they are as lost on this issue as we are.

I have read the entire thread and MAY have some insight to the problem of background ringing. I have a new HTC One. It is 4 days old. Today I experienced the low volume constant ringing. I tried a couple of the proposed app-based solutions but they did not work.

I reset the phone and the ringing stopped. But what caused the ringing? I have AVAST security on my cell. As soon as I reset the HTC one I received an email from the AVAST security system that indicated that my SIM card was removed and my phone we probably stolen.  Obviously the sim card was not actually removed but something in the software thought it was. Could be a hardware, firmware, or purely a software problem, but "maybe" the Verizon and/or HTC people can focus on this area for a solution.

@ BobbyS VZW Support, Please read my case report on my account. I have tried every option that Tech support has suggested to no avail. Last night on my drive home the faint ringing started up again. This happened just five days after having my sim card replace at the request of Tech support. As I have stated before I am already on a “replacement” device and it has the same issues that my original device had. At this point I do not want another “refurb” phone but a different device altogether. It is obvious that Tech support does not have a clue as to what is causing the issue therefore why keep playing around with it?

Hi Bailey6747

I know a faint ringing would be very annoying. Let's get to the bottom of this! Does this happen when using a particular application? Please power the device in safe mode and retest. Here's how: http://bit.ly/WJhcHA

Please let me know if the issue persists.

@ VZW support, what is the definition of insanity? " To do the same thing repeatedly and expect a different out come."

Our phones have a problem, to put it simply, FIX IT! Seeing that the HTC One has the exact same issue, pressure HTC to provide a solution. Simply giving your customers the run around is unacceptable.

Please make it stop! I have been over and over this with every new Tech support person I have had contact with.

No it does not do it on a particular app. The ringing is random no rhyme or reason as to when or what time it will start. The last time it happened I checked my running applications and Sense was using a lot of memory. After a restart the ringing stopped and everything was back to normal, as usual with this issue.

I have performed numerous factory resets. I have swapped devices. I have replaced my SIM card. I have turned off the battery fast boot. I have removed Facebook. The only thing I haven’t done is throw this darn thing into Lake Norman as I am driving down I77.

I have the HTC One for Verizon and today experienced the faint ringing problem.  My wife has the Droid DNA and has never had this problem.  So it appears the Droid DNA is not the only phone susceptible to the faint ringing.  Like everyone else has mentioned, only placing a call to the phone would get it to hush up.

Well...I WAS thinking about changing my Rezound for a nice shiny new HTC One, but I reckon I won't now!  I'll keep my old falling apart Rezound because it still works (Even though it's getting a bit long in the tooth!!!)

Just FYI DNA folks....this is happening on the HTC One also.  I just bought one and had the problem.  Found this forum a week ago after it happened and there was no fix other than reboot or make a call then hang up.  It happened today and I searched for HTC One specific issues (which weren't showing up last week probably because Verizon just got the HTC One) and poof, now there are HTC One owners complaining about the faint ringing issue.

For anyone having this issue, I'm trying to understand if this is related to cellular radio signal strength.

1) While the rining is occurring put put phone in "Airplane Mode" ( Settings --> Wireless & Networks 'More' --> Airplane Mode == checked ).

2) Does the ringing stop?  If it stops, then turn Airplane Mode off.  Now does the ringing come back?  If so, then it seems to be related to cellular radio, so check your signal strength, by doing "Settings --> About Phone --> Network, and look at the values for Signal Strength.  Is the value less than -103dBm?

(remember since it's a negative number, -103 is "less than" -100).

When signal strength is low (weak signal), the Transmitter has to transmit at a higher power and as it does this periodically it draws alot of current from the power supply, which theoretically can magnetically couple to the speaker.

On the other hand, if going into airplane mode (which turns the cellular radio off) doesn't impact the ringing at all, then we know it's not a radio issue, and can focus on software, etc.

Also, should note the Moble network type.  If more people can report this information (Airplane mode occurrence, signal strength, Mobile network type) then perhaps a root cause can be found.

My wife's Droid DNA phone this weekend had the faint ringing issue happen to her twice.  My HTC One also periodically suffers from the faint ringing.  The fact that this issue was originally reported January 3rd, which is eight months ago and Verizon doesn't acknowledge the problem or have any fix available is completely unacceptable.  There is a problem, it has been going on for eight months, please fix it.

So far turning the fast boot off in settings > battery and restarting my phone has been successful.

Dear Verison Rep...why don't you use a HTC DNA at home for a month or so. As I  said earlier, my family has four of these phones. Two were all ready replaced and they still have the ringing problem. I called HTC customer service while the problem was going on. He had no idea how to fix it. I am sick of the lack of attention we are are getting. I pay $300+ a month for my family's phones. Kind of tired of "we want you to be happy with our service" and "we are doing everything we can" Tell us something real.

I have had this problem with my HTC One from day one. I get the ringing atleast once a day while at work. I've gotten it to stop by using the app LTE on/off and switching to LTE/CDMA only. This disables the EvDo band with is basically 3G. Now, I live in an area where the 4G is pretty widespread so this is working for me. It looks like there is a problem on how the phone switches bands. I've been able to replicate the problem by toggling between LTE, CDMA, and EvDo when I'm in a low service area.
