WFLBBI, we are sorry to hear that you may have locked yourself out of your device. Please allow us to further explore your options. Can you please provide us the make/model of your device? Also, do you currently have a Gmail email account that is attached to your device? If so, please follow this link http://bit.ly/2nxrT4Z to be able to sign into the Android device manager which will allow you to remotely change your password to unlock your device.

This does not work on newer software just older

That is not correct. I just tested on multiple devices running jelly bean, nougat, and then oreo with success having device play sound, tracking on a map, and also remote wipe.
I was able to do all of these via the link provided above, on both mobile devices and a computer....

You are correct that all of those functions work. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be an "unlock without losing everything" option anymore. These options work if your phone is stolen. If you simply forget your swipe or pin, you cannot reset it anymore without losing all of your data and phone setup.
Does anyone else know of a way to do this?

There is not. If you forget your passcode, or pattern, there is no way to unlock it without erasing the entire device.

If that doesn't work, will need to do factory reset on device and then enter the Google credentials that were on device prior to reset to avoid activation lock/kill switch....
