LG G2 kitkat SEVERE battery drain and performace issues

After updating my LG G2 to kitkat the other day, my phone performance and battery life have been absolutely awful. Previously I could go 24  hours on a charge with moderate use, and now I'm lucky if I get 4 hours with it sitting on my desk unused with battery saver on. I also get stuttering while navigating, running apps, etc., and it freezes often. I can hardly even use my phone at this point. Anyone else encounter these problems? Anyone know what's wrong?

aedinger,

Thank you for reaching out to us. I am very sorry to hear of your troubles since updating your device to kit kat. There is no known issues with this problem currently. We definitely want to find out what could be the cause of this. Normally with any software update we suggest doing a factory reset. All information should be saved by either your google account and or your SD card. Here is the steps to completing the reset http://vz.to/1ijaOhZ. Please keep us updated if you see any changes.

Thank you,

In another discussion, reports of their files being backed up to Verizon's Cloud and as a result a lot of WiFi usage. Don't know if that's your situation or not.

If you can backup your files to a PC, you might want to perform a Factory Data Reset, but you will be inconvenienced because you'll have to set up your email again, and other settings for other things. Hopefully, your contacts are backedup on Google's server.

I had similar battery drain issues and have responded to a few others on this as well.

Resolution should be as follows:

1.)  Go into settings > location and then set location mode to battery saving instead of high accuracy.  Kitkat uses more location services, so putting in battery saving mode will help a lot.

2.)  Open up Google Now - swipe up from home button.  When in Google Now, click on menu settings and then Voice and then "OK Google" hotword detection - turn off this feature as it is constantly trying to listen for the hotword and the processor architecture of this phone is not as efficient as others that are designed specifically for this.  This will also help save battery.

After implementing both of these changes, I recharged the phone to 100% and have been monitoring battery and it has improved significantly, even better than the prior version of Android.  My battery meter directly within Android system settings is currently showing 100h and 10 min remaining with ~99% of battery remaining.

I also run the Snapdragon Battery Guru app from the Android Market - specifically made the the processor in the LG G2.

Hope this helps as it did for me.

When I go to location mode in settings on my LgG2, no battery saving option appears.

Hi all.   This is a followup to yesterday's reply.  Since setting the LOCATION to 'battery save' ,which turns off GPS, and also rebooting twice, I have no more problems.  Battery life is back to normal...only dropped 3% in 10 hours overnight.  Everything seems okay now.  Texts, etc. all work normally.  I believe the issue stems mostly from the GPS.  I have not turned it on again to see what happens but will try later.  GPS seems to drain the battery quickly when used in the LOCATION mode.  Rebooting a couple times may have also stabilized the OS, which is often the case with other computers as well. One thing just occurred which is troubling...Battery suddenly began to drain again while writing this.  Checked LOCATION and it was once again in 'high accuracy' mode.  Changed back to 'battery save' and all is fine again.  Don't know why it reset itself to 'high accuracy'.  Something to watch...  Anyway, most of you can avoid a full factory reset by just disabling the GPS feature in LOCATION.  But keep alert...It seems able to reset itself to using GPS.  Why?????????  Have a better day...

I am having the same problems. I can no longer get through a day at work with my LgG2 since getting the KitKat update. Prior to the update, it was not a problem. I have not had any success  fixing it.

Dehall, Updates should enhance your phone not slow you down. We're sorry for the battery issues since the update. Have you tried a master reset? this has been known to help with problems after update issues.

For what it's worth, I was seeing all of the above problems listed.  Remembering previous Android days, I backed up everything and pulled a full hard reset.  Taking the phone completely back to reset after the Kitkat update.  When I got that to take (did it the first time, did get the message about rebooting twice), everything took.  The entire setting menu changed, the appearance changed, all of it.  Battery and charging times seem to be back to normal now after having it acting up after the initial update.

I know it's a pain y'all, but try the backup and hard reset option and see if that doesn't help.  You'll know if it worked because the settings menu seemed to change entirely to me.

Good luck.

Disable the Caller ID app that comes on the phone. My phone started all these issues right after the free trial kicked on. After disabling the app, I have had no issues.

I'm so glad I'm not going crazy. I've tried removing apps, erasing all of my texts and only keeping maybe 5 a day, I put on a battery saver app that has seemed to help a little but my biggest problem is that I have noticed my texts taking 20 minutes sometimes to actually send. If I restart my phone it helps a little but it's no longer reliable and not the phone I love. I hope they come out with an update that fixes all of these issues soon.

I have been having these problems with my LG G2 and I just started using it two weeks ago. I tried a factory reset, but had to restart the phone first just to reset it. That didn't work so I took out my Sims card, restarted my phone, and put the Sims card back in. That seemed to have solved the problem until today when I had to repeat that process all over again just to have no problems. I hope I can get this issue fixed because I literally just started using this phone, and I've had plenty of cell phones and they've lasted much longer than two weeks with no problems at all.

Thanks. I agree Verizon probably will be of little help. Perhaps, then, they shouldn't even be attempting to answer such questions on this forum and simply refer users to the manufacturer?

I'm walking through my test plan as I described in my prior post. My LG G2 came pre-installed with 4.4.2, so I did not do an FDR originally. If my other less intrusive tests don't yield results, I'll do the FDR.

However, so far, I'm getting some good results. Significantly improved. That's after uninstalling Skype (which I didn't even use). I also noticed that somehow my Go Emoji keyboard was "turned off" (app running, but not selected as the default keyboard). So I'll need to make sure my tests check for that. I'll provide an updated post on this thread when my tests are done. It will be a few days.

After several weeks of testing a few things and making some observations, what I've found with my LG G2 is that it will, on occasion (every few days or so) get into a mode where "Android System" is consuming a higher percentage of power than even the display. After some hours, it seems to settle down. There have been also a couple of spurious cases where I found my high accuracy GPS on (not knowing how it got turned on). It's difficult to tell why Android System uses a lot of power. There are a lot of details in the list of items that it consists of. My experiments did, however, seem to exonerate the Skype app. So I'm still left with the mystery of why Android System will sometimes suck a lot of power since the tools on the device don't really let me narrow it down any further while the problem is occurring.
