Initially yhere shouldn't be a screen lock code, that is something that you would define. Is your Screen locked now?
If you want to lock the Screen you can go to Settings>> Location & Security and Define a "Lock Pattern" that you can use to unlock your phone in the future.

I ran into this exact same problem, and could find no answers anywhere else at Verizon support or in the guidebook for the LG Ally. However, after reading the solutions to your post, I tried the default suggestions (1234, 0000, etc.) until one worked, then I set my own passcode. I hope this also worked for you and will for anyone else who has encountered this issue.
