Phishing scam, need help.

10 minutes ago I recieved the following message on my LG Ally:

900070002256: Free VZW Msg: Your LG Ally will receive a software update soon.  Before you can receive this update, your Ally needs to install a small app.  Just click on this link to begin installation, then select Market: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.lge.upgrade .

The last two updates I had on my phone didn't require me to download this.

I immediately texted my wife and told her not to download it if she got the same text, but she already did.  She has since deleted and uninstalled it.

If this is legit, it's a pretty slimy way for Verizon to distribute it.  If I'm supposed to trust this message, it's going to be hard to know which messages I'm not supposed to trust.

Verizon, please confirm or deny that this is legit.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Just to clarify, the message you received is not a scam. As previously stated, you can go to the following link for additional information"

http://support.vzw.com/system_update/lg_ally.html

Also, if the link does not work from the text message, you can go to the Market and search for Upgrade Utility for Ally to download the application.

Thank you,

I hope this fixes the txt bounce back issue I have been having...just got to find out if it disables root..probablly doesn't matter, I'm about ready to get a new phone..the small amount internal memory or lack of using it efficiently drives me crazy.

I just spoke with Amanda from Verizon Wireless customer service, she said this is legitimate and safe to go ahead and click on the link.

Good to know that anyone can send me any random message and preface it with "Free VZW Msg" and provide some random link and I'm supposed to trust it.

Great policy, Verizon.  I'll keep this in mind when it comes time to renew my contract.

Hi Jessej07,

We appreciate your feedback. However, we assure you the message sent to the users of the LG Ally device with information on a link http://support.vzw.com/system_update/lg_ally.html was from us informing about the new software update. When software updates become available, usually they are pushed out to the devices and/or we send a message to notify the customer in a supportive manner. When such messages are sent the person has the freedom check the contents of the message. If there any doubt or concern about the received message, we can be reached out to in confirming the free message sent was legitimate.

I agree. My phone is still under warranty though, so I downloaded the app and am waiting on the system update. I can be the guinea pig if need be since if my phone messes up, I can get it replaced.

Also, I agree. Didn't have to download anything else for updates BUT I know our phone (Ally) has crappy memory and was barely able to support the last update when really it wasn't meant to.

I don't think my phone has that much available memory. Besides, it doesn't seem to be all that beneficial anyways.

When will there be an Ally 2 that is the same (qwerty keyboard) but way more memory Vz?

That is an excellent question. I would like to know that too!

I clicked on the link and selected Market, but it gave me an error saying could not find item.

I just called tech support and confirmed this does NOT appear to be a VZW msg. Their texts should come from numbers beginning "90008000" and this one is from 90007000. DO NOT INSTALL this application. She was going to let their security department know but it's likely an app that will hack your passwords if you do online banking etc.

Well, as others pointed out above, on the Verizon site we have:

http://support.vzw.com/system_update/lg_ally.html

which references the same app, which is made by LG, who probably don't distribute too much malware for their own phones.

Yes, but the txt did not come from Verizon, and she had no knowledge of an upcoming update. I would be very cautious about installing this until you know exactly what's going on.

So which is it. Real or fake. I have read some where that it's real but can't remember where now. I would like to see an Ally 2 with way more memory then the current one. Can't so much with 152.00 mb of memory currently. Need at least 8. A lot of the applications can't run off the SD card. I would be the first to get it if they come out with one by the time I am ready for a new phone next Year on November 30th. I love my Ally but needs more memory.
