My phone sometimes puts itself into car mode and there is a little steering wheel in the top corner of the screen and the screen stays lit. I don't know how to do this myself. I want to be able to do this for when I am driving and want to make a call but the stupid screen is always dark. Anyone else know what I am talking about?

I have had a Stratoshpere for several months and this has never happened to me. Are you sure the icon you see is a steering wheel and not the Settings icon?

yes it is a steering wheel. In the notifications it will say " car mode enable". Very weird.

What an unusual issue! I researched and found no related concerns, however I'm happy to get this resolved with you today.
Did you notice this happen after any update to the device or an application installation? First, I want you to check Settings> Applications>Manage Apps>All, and check for 'Car Mode' or 'Car Dock' if listed you want to tap 'Clear Data' to get rid of its default settings. Another great tool is enabling safe mode to determine if this is caused by any corrupt application installed from Google Play/Google Market. If the device runs in safe mode and does not encounter the safe mode issue, then we can conclude it's application related. If that is the case, the best step is to remove any recently installed (or updated) applications one at a time till the issue is resolved. If this fails, a hard reset may be necessary. The important to remember is the reset erased all the data, including the contacts, calendar events, and applications. Google/Gmail should be backing up your information since you activated the device, just sign into www.google.com/contacts to double check. After the rest, the on-screen activation steps will walk you through signing back into Gmail so your personal information syncs back to the device, along with your paid applications.

Thank you for your response. I ended up returning the phone since I was also having charging issues and they gave me another phone. This one works right and I don't get the car mode on this one. I told them at the store and they didn't know what I was talking about either. It was the weirdest thing. It was almost as though I had it in a car dock but I didn't.

My Samsung Stratosphere also continues to randomly put itself in car mode. I don't even have to touch it. Almost every time I plug it in, it does it too..

I remember someone reporting that they had this problem and it was related to a case or holster they were using -- somehow the case made the phone think it was in a dock. Do you have a case?

Hi kristak, Let's get your device out of the car pool lane! How long has this been happening? Are you using the original charger that came with the device? Does the charging port on the device seem to show any damage or corrosion? I look forward to getting this resolved!

I've been using the original charger it came with. It's been going on for a couple weeks. Since it's been acting up, my port is only charging sometimes and other times it acts like it has a short in it..

When I go to settings I do not see an application option to select.

After a little over a year and half, mine just started doing this too. Out of the blue, nothing new installed (knowingly anyway)
It's just another feature in the long line of features that keep popping up on this phone that I can't get rid of soon enough..

dbbd022, we want this to be a problem for you too! Let's take a closer look at your device. Does it have any physical or liquid damage? We recommend that you check the charging/data port for corrosion or damage. If there is corrosion, use a dry clean tooth brush to remove any corrosion from the charging port.
Have you downloaded 3rd party applications to your device? Some application software can affect the performance of your device. Try uninstalling a few applications and power your device off/on to soft reset. Keep us posted.
