I just returned from the Verizon store where I went to buy a new phone. I was told that I had to pay a $40 "upgrade fee" before I could buy a phone from them. Or, I could pay a $20 upgrade fee if I bought a phone from Verizon on-line. What is wrong with this picture? -- paying Verizon for the privilege of then giving them money to buy a phone. I consider this to be a poor business practice at the least and an example of corporate greed at the worst.

An upgrade fee has been charged since April 2012. It was recently revised this year to have the fee changed to $40 for an in store purchase and $20 for online purchases.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Also all the major carriers charge an upgrade fee and have been doing so long before 2012.
