Why can't I transfer files via USB?

I am trying to transfer a few files to my phone but when I plug it in I don't get any message about allowing files transfer (it IS charging, though). The phone shows up on my PC's list of devices but when I click on it I don't get a list of files. Thanks!

Was your phone recently updated to the Marshmallow operating system?  If so, the default USB mode is now charge only.  Pull down the notification shade, tap where it says USB Charging, and change it to File Transfer.
