I believe all cellphones in the U.S. are required to have circuitry designed to receive over-the-air FM radio transmissions. There are several apps out there designed to utilize this hardware however, on my Verizon phones all I get is the message theat the app doesn't have access to the FM radio receiver in my device. Other cellular providers allow access, why not Verizon?
There is no such requirement by regulations or law in the US for FM transmission for phones. Manufacturers charge carriers to have said feature and Verizon opts out of paying for that feature and chooses to comply with spectrum support required by regulation(Block C rules) which requires Verizon to pay licensing for each spectrum. This is cause Verizon to opt out of features and/or software manufacturers charge for to keep prices in line with other devices on other carriers. If Verizon took every option would you be willing to pay $150 more than the other carriers for the same device(in theory and regulation Verizon version would work on almost all carriers in the US)?
That sounds suspicious to me. Do you honestly expect me to believe that Verizon would have to charge customers $150 to cover the expense of access to a particular part of the (free) radio spectrum? We're not talking about transmitting within that spectrum, just reception of signals mandated as free by the FCC.
It's not free... To cover spectrum you have to pass the FCC regulatory testing and pay for them. You also have to pay Qualcomm for licensing to use their radios on said spectrums. This is nothing.
Might sound suspicious to you , but look at the European devices and their cost converted and their spectrum support. Then look at Sprint version and their spectrum support you will notice same features and less spectrum support and cheaper. Then look at Verizon. Same price less features, but ore spectrum support.
Best I can say... Build your own device and see how the licensing works.
Samsung provides the hardware. Verizon just blocks access to it so I have to use thier data to access radio. I paid for the hardware when i bought the phone.
They don't mandate that they are free. You still have to PAY for those airwave. You can't simply pick 93.9 and transmit. So how is that free? There are regulations, registration, and licensing you have to pay for.
Go to Sprint, get FM, but lose coverage.
