I've had an LG K20V for about 2 years and the thing is running Android 7, which is increasingly incompatible with current apps. Is there no update to Android 8?? I have seen this question in a couple of place and it seems like Verizon is the only place where I don't see a straight answer to the question.

Don't buy an Android phone expecting long term updates. I'm not a fan of iOS and use Android myself. With that said, an iPhone will keep getting years several years vs the typical 2 of Android.
Not all Android phones will be the same as my unlocked S20 is good at getting updates (for now). However, my Verizon LG was atrocious at getting updates to the point I wouldn't recommend LG if someone wants updates on Android. A Pixel would do better as it's the closest thing we got on the Android side to get long term support.
