For text mssages, download the app called Save MMS. Works great. It saves pictures from your text messages.

For email, if your checking email through your browser open the attachment to the picture. Hold your finger down on the picture and see if a menu pops up. Tap "save". If your using the email app then there should be an option to save the picture right on the attachment

It's a little misleading, but you press and hold the message around the picture (not the attachment itself)... your then get a popup to save the attachment.

maybe it is not a pic but a video.  It will not open.
