Once the box is unchecked, you shouldn't be seeing them. Back out of the app and then see if that changes anything. If not, then try powering off the phone for a minute or two and see if that makes a difference.
Actually... when you are on the message+ screen, after you click on the 3 lines in the upper left corner, and click on settings... *you need to click on CONVERSATIONS...this is where, you'll see the option to enable/disable "Smart Emojis".
