The "Regenerate app password" solution offered by AOL for "xxx.verizon.net" email customers does NOT work!
I am an IT professional and nonetheless, struggled for two days unsuccessfully to download my Verizon.net email back onto my PC (MS Office 365) and iPhone (Mail app), after an unexpected interruption in that service. Repeated attempts to reset my email account in both Outlook and on my iPhone, were futile.
There are multiple community posts regarding this software bug, yet to date AOL developers have failed to satisfactorily address this critical issue! Absent a fix to the above bug, the "forced" solution was to switch access to my Verizon email via the AOL website, as well as downloading and utilizing the AOL app on my iPhone...which is basically a link to their web site.
I will not speculate on AOL's reasons for perpetuating this issue, including the lack of a timely correction by its development team. However, the gross lack of communication and mishandling of this issue, would certainly lead one to believe that it is purposely designed to subject (i.e. - force) customers to contend with advertisements on the AOL website. This could be a major mistake having long-standing ramifications, as Verizon/Aol email customers jump ship towards Gmail or other friendlier (i.e. - ad free) email providers.
