So today I woke up to find my phone had randomly downloaded a new app. After removing the app, I've found several other people ALSO have this issue. After 2 frustrating hours, I also found not only was Verizon unhelpful with actual advice or reasoning as to why devices are doing this but information on the internet in other places is scarce as well. I've seen a few threads here also with similar questions, venting frustrations, etc; so I figured I'd make a post with an actual solution (for as long as it's relevant in case verizon shakes something up and the information isn't applicable anymore) and let my frustration be your solution.
*for reference, the following information is for an android device (as that is what I have), but I would assume Iphone is similar to some degree.
-Where do I find Verizon App manager?
So if you, like me wake up and discover strange apps downloaded, and several sources say "disable app manager" to fix the problem you may quickly realize that on some devices when you search app manager it doesn't pop up like other apps, and when you go in your settings it may not be in your list. So how are you supposed to get this app to disable it? Well first, I'll save you the time and let you know you can't download it from Google play or galaxy store (even if you look up all the apps Verizon has avaliable it won't appear), searching Google doesn't yield results, and that's all because it's already ON your phone. Now you may have already looked and not seen it in your list, for my phone it took over 45 minutes-1 hour for it to appear, additionally it appears without a icon image this is important because it's super easy to over look it because of this small little detail. It should appear in your app list as "Verizon App manager".
*Struggling to find it?
Settings > Apps > "Verizon App Manager" > Disable
-I found it, now what?
Once you've located it, click it and click disable, unfortunately all you can do is disable this app (if you click the three dots in the upper right hand corner you can also uninstall the recent updates, as well as you can click storage and clear your cache to free up some space, if you hit mobile data you can also toggle off the ability for it to run in the background).
-Additional information
I initially used to be a long time sprint customer (which defaulted to Tmobile after they bought the company), while I can't speak for other companies like AT&T, I can say as of the time of me writing this within the last 6 months Tmobile was ALSO doing this. Unfortunately I was unable to fix it on my Tmobile device before long term damage was done and because of all the frequent downloads it's basically reduced my tmobile device to a paper weight (it's just coming up on being a year old so it's not like it's simply a 3 year old device which is just no longer compatible with recent updates, the frequent downloads completely slowed the device to a crawl to the point I can't use anything on it and I know it's the frequent downloads as the internet and such isn't an issue and prior to the frequent downloads the phone ran with 0 issues). If you find you can't access it through the app list at any amount of time some people have said they were able to disable it after it downloaded a new app, but that they had to physically open the app manager through this feature in order to shut it off. If it's anything like the tmobile feature, it starts off slow maybe only one or two apps every few days to a week, before ramping up to several apps (minimum 1 app) every day. I noticed commonly it tended to be "popular" games such as candy crush, blocks, etc (but it hasn't been limited to just games).
