I have a smartphone through verizon wireless i bought it from someone else. is there any way of activating the phone using prepaid services.

Yes, but you cannot use a smartphone with the DAILY prepaid plans.  You have to choose one of the monthly plans and also add the $29.99/unlimited monthly data package.  The cost of the monthly plans is slightly higher on prepaid than on the contract side, but you can avoid paying a security deposit by going the prepaid route.
