I want to buy an unused prepaid card for Verizon Wireless from a friend but I don't have a verizon cell yet, is there a way to check the validity of the number on the back to ensure it is still worth the face value?

Without inputting the numbers no. If the card hasn't had its rubbing removed then it is more than likely unused.
Keep in mind that if the card came from a brick and mortar store, off a peg or rack, that it has to go through a register POS when purchased for registration and activation. Typically, cards are of no use otherwise.
