I'd like to know WHY Verizon will not allow the use of a Droid as a phone under their "pay as you go" plan ? I own one and tried to have my cell service transferred to replace the Samsung phone I purchased and was told that there are only 3 smart phones that are allowed to do so under my current plan. If I wanted to continue to use my Droid it would run $80 per month,.. I use no where near that amount of phone time monthly,hence the pay as you go plan and I still never use all my minute by the time I have to make another monthly installment.
As expensive as these phones are you'd think they would at least honor their own "branded" droid for use on their system,... I'm really considering leaving Verizon now,.. I have been a loyal customer of theirs since 2000 and have spent TONS of money annually for phones and service contracts since my membership. I always spoke highly of their service and coverage but now the simple request to transfer my phone number from 1 of their devices they sold me to another the y refused to do it,.. NOT very customer friendly anymore,.. and have become more hungry for money than customer satisfaction,..

Yes,.. the Droid Razr,.. I'm not sure of the model # but I'll take it out of it's case in the morning and see if that info is on the white label on the back of the phone. It's been in the protective case for some time now,..I get up for work @ 4am so I'm getting ready to hit the bed for the night. I'll get the info for you tomorrow and post it,.. My understanding of the pre-paid smartphone plans is that you CAN bring your own Verizon device as long as it is 3G and not 4G. You do NOT have to buy and use the 3 phones they offer at this time.
$60/month UNL Talk & Text, 500 MB data
$70/month UNL Talk & Text, 1 GB data
At least that appears to be the case from what I've read on the blogs.

That is my understanding too. Only a 3G smartphone can be used on the prepaid smartphone plan at this time.

It is a phone that they have produced to utilize in their market and in doing so makes it limited in many cases to the point not many carriers will allow the use of it in their service due to it being branded "Verizon". I see absolutely no difference,... it allows for the same services that my current Samsung phone offers ( IE: calls, internet, camera, etc.) with a few added bells and whistles.
With the cost of these devices to the consumer they should allow ANY phone that is sold by them to be used,.. Your paying for the services you use either way be it monthly or charged by the minute,... It just doesn't make any sense to me unless it's a game where they are trying to increase profits by bleeding the customer to purchase yet ANOTHER phone,...totally unacceptable !

In an ideal world, it shouldn't matter. In most other countries, it doesn't matter. But in this country it matters because the name of the game is not service. The name of the game is profits. Verizon considers LTE a "premium" service that they should be able to charge more for, so they are not going to canablize their cash cow by offering pre-paid LTE servive (yet). Now when the small pre-paid carriers start offering LTE in earnest, then Verizon will have to, but not until then. Right now, pre-paid is about "monetizing" their 3G while building out 4G LTE.

This is another example of corporate protectionism. Again, in most other countries, you buy an unlocked phone first, then pick the carrier you want to use. This works, because they all use standardized technology and have network sharing agreements in place. Pre-paid, post-paid, multiple phone and data devices, doesn't matter. Here, OTH, you are captive to the whims of your carrier, so you are subject to their stipulations on how, when, and where your phone works, be it carrier-branded or not.

Sure, they should allow a lot of things. Device agnostic connection to their networks, free tethering, multiple devices at no extra charge per account, sender pays with received messages free text messaging on non-unlimited text plans, non-inteerference in content delivery (net-neutrality) and interoperability between networks, all of which are common abroad, none of which are common here. Unacceptable? Certainly. Unfortunately, most Americans, unless they go abroad and get their eyes opened hard, just don't know any better, keep buying "cheap" phones on contract, and get raped over the course of 2 years or more. Keep that revenue coming, churning over that hardware. And until hardware and service are untied, that won't change. Personally I hate the US twireless business models, and if I could, I'd be the first to stick a fork in them.

I'm still considering a new service carrier now,.. I was in a service contract with Verizon for so long I was more or less "grandfathered " into it after my 2 years ran out and just carried the same plan month to month but the cost of the phone averaged $50 per month with a 500 minute plan,.. I was barely using 75-100 minutes per month so that's when I opted to just pay as you go,.. $30 per month savings now heads to the gas tank on the Hemi Ram,..
Thanks peeps for answering a few of my questions,.. not all of them are what I wanted to hear but I wanted to make sure someone at the Verizon outlet wasn't blowing smoke up. They sure weren't very explicit as to WHY,.. only answer I received was I CAN'T without any explainations,..
