I got a new phone yesterday and activated it with Verizon

I paid 30.50 $ for the first month to be renewed March 25

I had some extra $$ so today I made another payment- same amount- hoping to extend my service until April 25

However, the date for the next payment still says March 25

How can we correct this?

If you have a monthly prepaid plan, you might have to pay for an entire month in order to extend your account to the next month.

Any money you add to the account will be drawn from when you make the next monthly payment.  Any overpayment is just less you pay the next month.  But, overpayment does not extend the service period.  If your service is $30 a month, for example, and you pay $40, then next month on the same date you would apply the $10 credit and pay $20.
