Prepaid Moto E Model XT1528 - Can this be used on a GSM Network?

As I understand, the Moto E Verizon Prepaid smartphone model XT1528 is unlocked.

Can it be used on a GSM network?

If so, shouldn't there be an option for "GSM" in the phone's settings (in Android 5.1:  Settings / More / Cellular networks / Preferred network type). Right now, the only option available is "LTE / CDMA".

Thank you!

My VZW Moto E (XT1528) stopped working on GSM network AFTER Software/system update from Android 5.0.2 ... to 5.1.

This devices used to work perfectly on both AT&T and VZW network until this recent system update.

This is illegal!

What is illegal about a software update for a Verizon phone for Verizon's network?  Why would you be on a GSM network anyway?  Last I checked, Verizon 4G phones weren't locked.  Now, whether or not the phone has the radios in it to work on GSM IDK, but I'd imagine the service would suffer even if it worked partially.

Hi Snn5,

Did you read the rest of my original post? you asked how it's illegal? did you check the links for CTIA & FCC? this device has Band 2 and Band 4 capable hardware. it works for T-Mobile and AT&T. before software update, all you had to do was toggle a setting from CDMA to GSM and it worked right away for these carriers. Now you have to dig deeper and unhide the options that mysteriously disappeared upon software update.... hmm interesting

with the earlier version of Android Software on this device (5.0.2) it was easier. It seems now they have made it more difficult. which is illegal for Verizon to be Carrier locking their 4G LTE devices now that President Obama has signed a law forbidding VZW/ATT/TMO/SPR from carrier locking devices that have the technology capable of operating on multiple frequency bands.

Cell Phone Unlocking FAQs | FCC.gov

A new era of choice for cell phone users has begun, as all nationwide service providers have fully implemented policies that allow their customers to "unlock" their cell phones when they change between compatible wireless service providers.

In 2014, CTIA-The Wireless Association adopted six standards on unlocking into the CTIA's Consumer Code for Wireless Service (www.ctia.org/policy-initiatives/voluntary-guidelines/consumer-code-for-wireless-service). The new standards, which are fully in effect among all nationwide mobile service providers as of Feb. 11, 2015, give consumers greater freedom and flexibility while increasing incentives for service providers to innovate.

WASHINGTON – In response to U.S. President Barack Obama signing the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act (S. 517) into law, CTIA Vice President of Government Affairs Jot Carpenter issued the following statement:

“CTIA thanks Senator Leahy and Congressman Goodlatte for their work in crafting a piece of legislation that promotes consumer flexibility... We recognize that some consumers may want to unlock their devices to move to another carrier..."

Sorry, there was nothing in that initial reply you posted that referred to links or OTA software updates being illegal.
