Using Verizon prepaid service while outside of the US

Thinking of switching from a postpaid to a prepaid plan to save a bit of money...
I travel abroad frequently. When I am outside the US, I want to be able to send and receive text messages mostly. Under my current postpaid plan, this just costs $0.05 per text message sent, and $0.50 per text message received.
There is an option to purchase a Travel Pass for $10/day, but there is no way I'm spending that much money when I can be away for weeks at a time. The "Pay as You Go" option of $0.05/$0.50 for text messaging works just fine.
Under a prepaid plan, Verizon seems to be indicating (based on what I've seen on their website), that the only option is to purchase the $10/day Travel Pass. No mention of a "Pay As You Go" option. But I find this a little hard to believe.
Does anybody have any personal experience with this?
Thanks,
Eric

Why not just explain it here so others with the same interest can see the answer?
