Smart Family Companion App Stops Data

My child's Smart Family companion app requires VPN to be on. While on we can track location and created data limits etc. However it stops our child from using data at all. Including texting, apps, calls etc. We have reinstalled it, spoke to a Verizon associate in store and they also agreed " the VPN being in is stopping the regular data usage" but when we turn it off, we can't utilize the app.
What is the fix, the ACTUAL fix?
