AOL email stopped working

My AOL email has stopped working.  I've tried clearing the cache, clearing out and re-entering my password.  I can't delete the account - I've tried repeatedly, but since it is the default account and that can't be changed, deleting it is out of the question, I guess.  I haven't gotten any new mail in over a week.  Taking the battery out or shutting off the phone and restarting don't work either.  I'm out of tricks.  Help, please.  Thanks.

Okay! I got through to a Verizon tech who seemed to know the story - and a temporary fix. He explained that when we all get updates to our G3 phones, it is up to the various MAIL SERVERS to update their servers accordingly.  At present, only gmail seems to keep current.  He said Verizon has no control over when aol or yahoo or hotmail update their servers to communicate with the G3 phones with each android system update.

However, he told me what he did with his phone, until the server updates are done:

-go to the google play store

-find and download the "K9" app (K9 is the one app that keeps up with all server updates)

-add your usernames and passwords for aol or yahoo or whatever

-DO NOT try to manually set up incoming/outgoing server info - this will be done automatically by K9 for you.

I installed K9 and it works perfectly...it doesn't look as good as what I'm used to, but I can get ALL my email - and for the first time ever, I can actually see & use my mail folders as they are on my laptop! The way to access your folders: open your email to your current email list, then hit the left key (menu) - you will see the option "Folder List," which opens up your folders.

I hope this works for you folks too.  Like edcbittner, when trying to use the email app on my phone (for aol), a long hidden string was in my password text box too. VERY frustrating...but at least we have this K9 app for now, as a work around.

No - none at all. And I am ticked! It feels like we're being forced to use only gmail. Not happy.

I have the problem as well. It looks as though it is not confined to to the GSIII but across the board. I tried clearing the cache etc. that was posted on here and it didn't work. It deleted the account and will not allow me to add a new account, error 503 service not available. From the posts on here it started about 12/20 and no response from VZW..........

My aol email also stopped working.  Went to Verizon store and they tried taking battery out (sick of the take-battery-out solution to every problem I'm having btw), and when they/I tried deleting the account, got message that account couldn't be deleted because other apps use it. Mystery to me (and Verizon guy) what apps that would be or why aol has hi-jacked my phone.  I also can't deselect the aol account as my primary email account (in settings)!!! So I can't seem to switch to gmail. WHAT'S UP VERIZON/AOL?

<Comment about moderator activities removed per the .>  I see Verizon techs sometimes address issues that customers post, but this one is either one they don't care about or simply have no answers for.  How about it techs?  We all could use some answers.

Unfortunately, I no longer live in an area that has Verizon service centers.  The closest one is about 45 mins away.  Has anyone gotten any answers from a service center yet?  I'd appreciate any help you can give.  Even if it is that I need to go to a service center.  Thanks again.

The VZW service center rep advised us to download the Yahoo app rather than use the one that came with the phone.  That worked for us.

DITTO on the VZW techs ignoring user questions.

What Yahoo app? I'm really struggling w/not having my primary AOL email, not being able to have gmail be my primary (AOL won't let me deselect), etc. What Yahoo app?

Hi..its called Y!Mail and is a purple folder with a white envelope that says yahoo under it. That will get you yahoo mail. I cant find a way to get aol yet. There is also a gmail app that came on my phone I think. It looks like a whit envelope with a big red M.  We couldnt find an aol app so I think you would have to go to internet explorer, type in aol.com and bookmark the sign in page and check it periodically unless you can have aol mail forwarded to a yahoo or gmail account until this is fixed. I have spoken with 2 verizon reps who claim they know about it and some of the phones affected have been rectified by it comes out in stages. We can only hope we are the only stage left!  Mine stopped on Dec. 20th and they didnt upgrade my phone version till the 26th so that didnt  cause the problem for me unless the 20th is when verizon changed over something from the ics to jellybean. Someone is supposed to check back with me on Monday.

You seem to already have made it.  This is the first post since your very first post to not have what appears to have been an email reply with your full name in it.

Go to service center - but don't expect to get resolution. Verizon needs to get on this.  The Verizon guy helping me tried everything - taking battery out,  password changes (but new password wouldn't stick on phone), 3 different ways to delete the application, trying to deselect "primary" email - all failed. He was stumped after 40 minutes and I'm left dangling w/out my email

Hi..I have had the same issue since the 20th with aol, gmail, yahoo accounts but my corporate server will work. They say they are syncing daily but are not and I cant send or receive those emails on my phone but see that there are new emails when using a computer.Tech support is saying that they know about the issue and are working on it. Some got corrected on the 26th but not mine..I cant reset to factory defaults either or delete and re enter an account. I did download the yahoo mail app in the meantime and the gmail app that came on my phone still works..just not if I go to my mail icon..then it doesnt work. I cant find a work around for aol without going to the internet explorer, opening aol and checking mail...no notifications though..

They did update my phone remotely to try to fix the issues by installing jellybean as i had ice cream sandwich. it didnt help and not sure I like it but it is what it is..
