Battery Icon grayed out, use to be green in color and lost the battery info for Mophie Juice Pack add on battery
The battery icon, like all other icons in the notification bar, should be white, which is a Google requirement for KitKat. It may look 'grayed out' as the battery depletes since it'll be a white outline with the color fill approximating the amount of battery left.
My Battery Icon has been green since I bought this phone last year. Also the Mophie Juice Pack Battery, which is a 2300mAh battery that also acts as a protective back to the phone had an Icon on the top left side of the phone where you see notifications such as Twitter, Email etc. BUT since the update this morning I get no Battery Info for Mophie and only a white Icon for the battery, which is hard to see. Also seems I am missing calls all day today and dropping or failing to connect on calls I make. Looks like there may be a problem with the latest software update.
It sure would be nice if Verizon could tell us how to go back to 4.4.1. Help Verizon?
I agree

There is no official way to roll back (and discussing unofficial ways is against the forum's Terms of Service).
Yes, but since it wasn't thoroughly tested before it was rolled out, allowing us to rollback to 4.3 would only be common courtesy. In light of so many people having crippling errors with their devices since the OTA upgrade, I'm sure you would agree.

Have you tried a system cache clear or a factory data reset? Those are recommended after an OS update when issues are encountered.
These kind of problems simply do not exist on the stock Android 4.4. Kit Kat. The problems stem from Samsung loading up literally gigabytes of bloat, then handing the phone over to Verizon who, similarly, loads the phone up with additional gigabytes of bloatware.
It's no wonder each update brings a plethora of problems to users.
By the way, have you seen the new independently produced OnePlus One phone? This will be the wave of the future...a top line phone with a streamlined Android OS offered off contract at a price little more than the subsidized prices we now pay to Verizon. The phone initially will be GSM only, but I'm hopeful that there will be a CDMA/LTE version available by the time my contract term is up. Or, perhaps, I'll simply move to a GSM network and get this phone!
RoyPilot, if you want to add the digital percentage of your battery to the top of your phone follow these procedures:
Press the Menu soft key
Select Settings
Choose the My device tab on topSelect Display
Scroll to the bottom and place a checkmark in Show battery percentage (this will show the percentage of the battery right next to the battery icon)
Stargazer,
I have the % of battery showing and an icon that slowly turns gray from white (used to be green and the green slowly disappeared) But the thing that does not show now is the Icon for the Mophie Juice Pack, when it is in the on position and recharging my phone battery. Lost it on the last software upgrade to the phone.
I did the update early this morning and now the data wont stay on!!! i've tried rebooting it so until i can connect to wifi i guess i'll just keep it off. Anyone else having this problem?
Both of our phones have been affected by this update (S4 and Iphone). The battery gets very hot when charging, the charge doesn't last and both phones are incredibly slow. Sometimes 30-40 seconds between commands, then it seems to work fine for a while. Both phones were purchased in Feb. Tried to get online tech support, but of course all operators are busy helping others, who most likely are having similar problems. This makes my lack of reception problems seem rather minor.
Outgoing messages are failing. Didn't have that before. I have to reboot to get the message to send.
Franckp,
I'm having similar problems. My battery is draining quickly and is overheating now. Also I have noticed apps seem to be slower now.
I'm having problems with losing my 4G signal while on my home wifi - but not the wifi at my work. Battery icon is also all white now, where it used to be green. I have rebooted several times, but that did not resolve the issue. I'm wondering if there is something I can reset on my home router?
I have lost the ability to receive email. Sending works. Receiving goes through the motions, but nothing appears in the inbox and no errors are encountered.
Batter Icon did change colors and you are first to agree with me, thanks. Also I am having similar problem. When connected via router on Wifi my 4G signal is down to 1 bar and sometime 2, but I drop or fail to connect a few calls now from inside my house and that NEVER HAPPENED before this update. When I disable the Wifi calls do not drop as much. Come on Verizon how about answering some of these issue!!
Same thing with my phone. Battery level icon now white which has always been green since I bought my phone a year ago. Also, having issues getting my email and messaging since the update.
Running in the same issue, keep having to reboot to send SMS. Also finding that MMS I need to reboot to receive it's as if the data just stops. However SMS I am receiving just fine.
Mine was updated by Verizon this morning and now my battery does not charge properly! Batter seems to draining faster than normal and while plugged in it will still loose charge. I only seem to get it to charge by having to turn it off and it still is extreamly slow to charge while turned off. Do not like at all.
MK2 to NC5 this morning, immediately killed inbound email. Tried clearing system cache per first page of this thread, no change. Email app claims "Master sync has been turned off". There is no setting anywhere for turning it on or off. When I go into accounts/email, it takes me right back here. Tried toggling it on/off with no change.
When I try to clear my cache it says "Security policy restricts clearing of this app's cache". Umm...THAT'S HELPFUL!
I'm also having serious problems after "upgrade" Lost wifi connection - simply won't connect, tried factory reset, remove batt, wipe system cache, reset wifi settings but I see from others including folks from Sprint and ATT that this is a widespread mess. Come on, consumers are tired of being used for beta testing on untested crap.
Phone was working great until this "improvement"
Ok. I reinstalled my router and everything is better. Battery icon is still white, but seems to be going down as the battery goes down. Weird.
I must be one of the lucky ones. I have noticed NO problems since updating to Kit Kat with the exception of one app. The app backed up all my downloaded apps to the SD card, but after the Kit Kat update it lost the ability to recognize the SD card. I contacted the manufacturer and they are working on correcting that issue.
E_Pigram, We want you to enjoy updates, since they're meant to enhance your phone's functions not cause problems, I apologize. What happens exactly with the data? Does it revert to 1X? Does it happen at a specific location? AdaS_VZWFollow us on Twitter at @VZWSupport
I have two Galaxy S4 phones. After the update, my phones drain their batteries super fast and the charging process is painfully slow. I used to be able to charge the battery from 20% to 100% in just over an hour. Now it takes 3-4 hours to do the same charge. On top of that, the phone is heating up a lot. It's ridiculous. I've noticed no improvement in performance whatsoever after this update. So much for updating for the sake of improving the product. This update is going backwards in performance.
[Replying to my own message]
"Master sync" is apparently the same as "Sync" which can be found by swiping down from the top and then hitting the four boxes in the upper right. I was able to toggle it on, and recovered functionality of my inbound email.
The user interface for the email program has changed, the menus don't look quite the same. The digits on the lock screen look slightly different too. I can live with the cosmetic differences but the update breaking my email was unacceptable. It was working fine in MK2.
I don't recall seeing Sync as a setting before, in particular I don't remember seeing it as part of the email program. Does anybody know if the sync function was always included in the email app, and was simply turned off by the NC5 update? Or was the sync function always present but not included in the email app until NC5 added it?
embru,We want to make sure you have a fully functional device! Have you tried to remove and readd your home wifi network on your device? Settings>Wifi>Tap on Network name>Forget. Regarding the change in color of the battery icon, that is a software enhanced change that is expected. LindseyT_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWsupport
gssieg, This is quite odd and certainly concerning, let's get to work and fix it. Do you lose data in a specific location? Do you receive an error message when you notice MMS and SMS not going through? When did this start? Please follow steps http://vz.to/1s77sEC to reset text messaging app. Keep us posted. That is definitely not normal, especially after an update, brewrmark. There may be an issue with an app not working properly with the new update. The update may also have installed incorrectly. I recommend performing a master/hard reset, after backing up all your important data. ( I would also remove your SD card after backing up your content, if you perform a master reset, as it will typically reformat your SD card too) This typically clears up a lot of the issues that may appear after updating to a new OS version, including the battery issue you are experiencing. Here are the steps : http://vz.to/1fN6gGoOnce you are back in the set up screen, please make sure that you disable Google's auto download/recovery service. This will download all your previous downloaded content from the play store. We recommend downloading the apps you would like to download manually, and one by one to check for incompatibilities. Please keep us updated!NicandroN_VZWFollow us on twitter @VZWSupport
I updated my Galaxy s4 to nc2 a couple days ago, and now my phone will not charge at all...does not recognize the charger is connected, and my phone has completely drained and is displaying a grey battery icon and doing a short vibration tone every 20 seconds or so....I cannot get it to stop. I've tried several chargers - no change. I was able to power it up briefly before the battery was completely drained, and cleared the cache. Did not help. Same problems as others as well in that the battery gets hot, and battery drains super fast. I REALLY wish I had chosen not to install this update. Please help!! There are many of us here who rely on our phones for business, and not having my phone is seriously impeding my work.
Hello gust334, this is definitely out of the ordinary! Let's get to the bottom of this together. Please try deleting the email accounts and apps and then re-adding to see if it will bring back the default sync.WiltonA_VZWVZW SupportFollow us on twitter @VZWSupport
More Settings : Sync == "Master sync", thanks Pinmaster
No need to delete email accounts and recreate them. No need to clear system cache. Don't know why the NC5 update disabled email, but turning Sync back on seems to have restored email.
TimeWellWasted,It is never good to hear that a update has caused problems with a device. Updates are suppose to improve the device. Have to checked settings to see what it draining the battery? Settings>More>BatteryLindseyT_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I reinstalled my router and everything is better. Battery icon is still white, but seems to be going down as the battery goes down. In fact, all my icons are white - missed called, messages, etc. this seems to be a downgrade - not an upgrade. Weird.

I'm having a lot of the same issues listed. Text messaging only works after I power off the S4 and turn it back on. the message just says "failed". Once I reset the phone, I can click on the message and hit resend and it goes through. I can normally send one or 2 more messages without resetting but soon after I have to power it off again. 4G no longer appears and I have removed and reinstalled my home router with no luck. The bars no longer go above 1, no matter where I sit in the house or even when I walk outside.
Yes. Three of us in the same household have S4s and all are having problems. We can't text without rebooting. Messages continually fail. We no longer get 4G service. I had a Droid Razr Maxx until I got the S4 a few weeks ago. I got 4G service at home all the time. In fact, I used it for work calls instead of my work BlackBerry because I got no service on the Work BB (also a Verizon phone). Our batteries drain far too quickly. I called Verizon several times. I'm told I'm in a "marginal" area. Well, I've read on the web that those in marginal areas with S4's are no longer getting much 4G service. It's ridiculous. Also, I switched my Verizon work BB for an AT&T BB, and I get great 4G service. I now make all my calls on the work BB because the S4 gets lousy service now (the Droid Razr Maxx worked great as well). There are instructions out on the XDA Developers site about going back to the previous update. I haven't tried them yet, but I might. They are usually included with instructions on how to root the NC5 update. The problem with going back to a prior release is that someday you might accidentally install the new release. You might be typing away, and a message pops up, and you've inadvertently said yes to the update when you didn't mean to (this happened to me with the Droid). So, I'm not thrilled about going back to the 4.3 release just yet. Anyway, I have wiped out the phone and started again, but that doesn't help at all either. I sincerely hope that Verizon issues a fix soon. We are seriously considering switching to AT&T. Only one of our phones is on a contract at the moment. My wife and I would lose our grandfathered unlimited data plans but we're getting so frustrated with not being able to send texts or to make clear calls that we might just do it.
My Samsung HM3600 Bluetooth headset has become VERY difficult to use since the last software update from MK2 to NC5.
It takes a long time for the phone to respond when I tap the headset to initiate a call.
Once it places the call it appears that it puts the headset into MUTE mode. I have to tap it again to hear the call. Sometimes this disconnects the call.
Once I have finished that call I have to switch the headset off and then on again in order to initiate a call from the headset.
Every time there is a new software update it seems that my headset function and voice dialing function changes. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. This last time is VERY MUCH FOR THE WORSE.
Yes, Lots of problem texting since update! Most of the time I cant send text without rebooting.
I had TERRIBLE problems with this update - my battery drained almost immediately, and then my phone would not recognize any charger, so I was left with a dead phone. I spent 1.5 days going back and forth with Verizon support, running all over town doing what they asked me to do (talk to the Samsung people at Best Buy, buy a new battery, do a factory reset, etc), none of which helped. They ended up shipping a new phone.
I have NOT installed the update on the new phone - I keep deferring it - and will not install it until I hear that these issues have been resolved.
It is extremely disappointing that this has been going on for a month with no resolution.
@belthr01,I totally understand how upsetting this must be for you! Updates are meant to improve your phone, not cause you headaches. You mentioned you have three S4 and they are all having the same messaging issue. Have you checked to see if there is a 3rd party that has been downloaded on the three phones? I want to make sure it isn't a 3rd party app causing the problem. Was a hard reset http://vz.to/TOk35T done on the phones since the update? JohnB_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
belthr01, Thank you for further details. I'm sadded by the fact that you are looking to leave the VZW family. There would be a few more steps that I would like to try. Let's go into Settings, Tap on More on the top, Application Manager, Slide the screen to the left until we get to the ALL section, Scroll and tap on Caller Name ID App, Tap on Force Stop, Clear Data, then tap on Turn Off. Then head back to the main screen. We are going to make sure that Hangouts has SMS disabled. The way we can do that is tap on Hangouts, Menu (box with the two line to the left of the home button), Settings, SMS, make sure it says SMS Disabled. Head back to the home screen. The we are going to restart the phone and test in safe mode. Here is how you can place the phone in safe mode: http://vz.to/KSMLOb Please keep me posted on the outcome of these steps.
