Back light

Is there a way to have the phone light up when I get a call or a text?

The phone should automatically light up when a call comes in. (Or did you mean when you've missed a call?)

 

As far as having the screen turn on when you recieve a text... I've yet to find anything in the menus of the default Messaging app... But there are alternatives that offer that functionality. (I can attest to the fact the Go SMS has it.)

my phone has never light up when I get a call......  is there something in settings that I can change so it will light up?

Rather that making a completely new post, just edit the first one.

@jule2663 Maybe I am misunderstanding... When you say it doesn't "light up" do you mean that the screen does not turn on? or that your LED indicator does not light up? When I have an incoming call (my phone is ACTUALLY RINGING), my screen automatically comes on. If your device isn't doing this, I would imagine there is a defect. If you don't mind, offer some clarification of what you mean: 1. during incoming call or after a missed call? 2. the screen or the LED indicator?

Look into Handcent SMS.  I installed that on my first Android phone about a week after getting it and have NEVER looked back.  It's extremely customizable.  Alternatively, you can leave it alone "out of the box" because the default settings are pretty awesome.
