What is the diamond with a cross in it with waves on the right on the Annunciator Line/on top of the screen?

I can't send of receive messages or calls with it.

Please help!  Thanks

I think it is 911 Emergency Location Services, which should not interfere with making calls or sending messages.

That is correct.

The waves radiating upward to the right of the diamond signify WiFi is on.  If WiFi is on, you won't have 3G to the right of the diamond.  You cannot make normal calls without 3G being on.  Pull down your annotation bar and see if WiFi button is on (green).  If it is on, tap it to turn it off.  3G will come back on automatically and you should be able to make calls.  Hope that helps.

You have to make WiFi active. The OTA did not turn it on by default.

huh?  The wifi symbol is a little . with the "waves" going upward.  And you don't use 3G to make a call as Verizon's voice is over 1x.  Being connected to wifi is currently the only way to do simultaneous voice and data on Verizon.

the diamond with a cross in it by itself indicates e911 enabled indicator. the reason it's now there, where it wasn't is a new thing where 911 gps services must now always be on. this only enables the gps when 911 is dialed, and doesn't effect the phone otherwise. what does wifi have to do with any of this?

and it wasn't a swype update.

This Was something I've seen on older phones, but never on my fascinate until that stupid swype update last night ... I think verizon threw in some of their own 'updates' with it

It's connecting and monitoring something, but my wifi, gps and bluetooth are all off

I'm irritated and curious to see what my phone has started doing without my permission

Its not the wifi indicator ... There are 2 things I think are being talked about here, but are not the same thing

Wifi is where you can connect to other hotspots like a laptop would and use internet that way

And wireless, which is the connection to the verizon network and allows the data connection and/or voice

Neither has to do with this 'diamond with cross' icon or the random radiating waves coming off of it

**someone please correct me if I'm wrong about this**

until last night, it's never been on my phone and nothing but the latest update has changed

It's not malicious, just irritating and since it doesn't show up on any 'services or processes' screens, it leaves me wondering why it's necessary and how much of my battery/resources it is using and most importantly, why I can't turn it off if I want to

The icon you are referring to is the new GPS icon. This was added after the latest update DL09. The bulls eye with the radiating waves to the right will show with the GPS turned off. When GPS is turned on and in use the icon changes to a round antenna with the waves radiating at about a 45 degree angle.

Sorry, my mistake - I didn't mean swype update, I meant swype update

See what I mean?

the update (dl09) that caused the icon to appear, had nothing, or at most, very little to do with swype.
