Since the 2.2 update, my Fascinate will take a screen shot when I push the on/off button to close down the display. I hear this click like I've taken a picture with the camera. This happens at least 6 times each day. I've gone into the camera mode to see if the pictures are saved so I can delete, but nothing there. What's up with that? I haven't upgraded to ED04 yet because some of my friends are having even more problems since upgrading from ED01. Ayone else having this issue? If so, were you able to get it to stop?

Add 2 more phones into the mix. Myself and my wife both have samsung fascinates and I SWEAR I will never ever ever buy another samsung product again. The faulty software and awful integration this phone make it hardly worth the beautiful screen when it never works. On top of that with a nearly 200$ phone bill every month one would expect first and foremost a phone to function as a phone.. I miss calls all the time.. the phone randomly resets itself??? GPS never locks on .... and to add to that this is my 4th samsung fascinate.. WHEN WE REPORT AN ISSUE ALL YOU GUYS DO IS GIVE US THE SAME PHONE WITH THE BUGS IN IT AGAIN????
what kind of logic is this.... here let me see oh oh thats broken.... here you can have another one even though it is broken too...
Shame on me to be fooled twice by samsung for the beautiful screens and powerful hardware... first the omnia and now the fascinate, but at least I've learned my lesson
Verizon you have a great network, Please step it up.. offer your fascinate customers another phone.. we pay you lots of money per month for your network. provide us with a device that works

same issue here. the latest upgrade to android 2.3 did not resolve the problem. when I get this problem, I hit back button one time and it returns to normal. This phone has been constantly freezing/rebooting on me and Verizon doesn't seem to care much.
I brought it to the store today because it stopped charging normally. It'd charge and stop and charge contantly.. also doesn't get recognized by computer as usb device.
They looked at it and said it has corroded port.. I thought samsung was only bad at making software, but bad at making hardware as well. it has been less than a year. amazing... if I dropped it in water or something, then I'd understand, but this is phone.. it should be able to handle normal exposure everyday life stuff..

Since doing the GB update, my Fascinate has quit taking the screen shots randomly... Hopefully it is fixed...

I do not have a case on my phone. In fact just to see I put the phone flat on the desk and only touched the bottom left corner and the power button and it took a screen shot. IT IS NOT USER ERROR IT IS THE PHONE!!! I have been with Verizon since 1995 and have 4 other lines with the company but I am ready to go with somebody else because this is ridiculous! I have talked with people who have the Samsung Mesmerize which is through US cellular but is the exact same phone and they don't have this problem. It is a Verizon issue and needs to be fixed. The fact the the company saying it is user error is **bleep** because we can't all be doing the same thing wrong. Just by this blog there are TONS of people having this problem and I am sure more who haven't said anything on here. I may be forced to pull my account and tell everyone I know and don't know, how Verizon treats their customers.

You can also add my original and replacement Fascinates to this list. The screenshot error happens consistently when I press the power button to make the phone go to sleep. I am 100% certain that I am not touching the back button when hitting the power button. I do not have a case or cover on the phone.
I also have the issue of the phantom back button. When I am in a variety of applications including gmail, browser and market the back button will activate without being pressed and take me back one or more screens.
Being that my phone is now over 1 year old I do not want to pay the $80 or $90 for a replacement through insurance for a problem that is quite clearly widespread.

I do have the 2.3.5 update. I have performed a factory reset. I have not installed any 3rd party applications at this time. So far my phone is not doing phantom button presses as of yet, but it has only been a few days. I don't know how long i can last stock, but i need to trace down a battery issue or my phone dies too quickly... less than 4 hour battery life just streaming music, no texting, no calling, no email, no screen on...
If it continues to work well over the next week for me I might suggest a factory reset if you haven't already done it since getting the 2.3.5 update.
I will not suggest a factory rest at this time though as my phantom screenshots were very random and only happened about 2 times a week if i did not power off my phone. Right now due to battery issues my phone is powered off every day at least 1 time a day. This might be reseting something and keeping the phantom button presses hidden from me.

You would seriously change providers just because of the phone taking a random screen shot? I think that is a little extreme... Have you done some of the things that others have suggested throughout the forums? Clearing your cache's? Factory Reset? Mine would do the random screen shot every couple of days on Froyo, but since the Gingerbread update it has not happened once... I don't think I did anything that most other people did, I have never done a factory reset on my phone in the 14+ months that I have owned it, but I have gone through and cleared the cache on a few things.

I have experienced this too. It just randomly happens. Last night for instance I was just getting the phone out of sleep mode and it took one of these random screen shots. Then the phone froze on me. This has happened several times to me. Now that I read this thread, I see I am not the only one with this experience.

Just would like to add my voice to the list here. I think the description that fits best is a few posts back. All I hit is the power button. usually when i go to wake up or to put to sleep my phone. So its as if the back button is constantly down. The only way that I can get it to stop taking screen shots is by hitting the back button. Hitting home does nothing to get it out of this mode.
I found the screen shots it takes in "My Files" in the "Screen Capture" directory. Pretty easy to delete the pics from there. (unless you have g+ setup to upload all pics on the phone )
Hope this helps. It is very frustrating to have to go clean these up. I am sure that i'd like to use a screen capture at some point, but without having researched this bug, i'd have never known how to do it. Seems silly to implement a feature w/ no way of telling your users its there.... maybe this is verizons way of educating its users? 😜

Hello to all community members that are experiencing this issue, and thanks to all that have shared their experiences and reported on it here. I know you've all been patiently waiting for a response on this matter, and I thank you again for your continued understanding. This matter has been elevated to our product research team for review. I do not have any additional details on where the review process is at this time. Again, thank you so much for your patience!

I have noticed it at other times also, mostly when I am using the navgation. It is very irritating to have the Google Navigation app ask you if you want to cancel the navigation, when it is just sitting in the car dock that Verizon sells, travelling along the road. I have to reach over and hit "no" to not cancel. I traveled the other day from Almond, NY to Albany, NY (a little over 4 hours), and it probably did this 6 or 7 times, plus the phone froze once, causing me to miss a turn and go 1/2 hour out of my way in another direction.
Can you say this phone is "useless at times"?

I agree NuDroidUsrr it happens at random times so hopefully they will not just focus on the areas reported and truly uncover the root of the problem. I have had my phantom buttons go off when I was using the built in browser, built in email, built in market, and some other apps that are built in. It is sick when it happens on a fresh factory reset phone with no 3rd party apps, but once that happened it was easy to say it was not my 3rd party app causing the issue. I would go into an app, start using it, and then before I knew it it was backing out. Right now I would have to guess the worst button that seems to have phantom presses is my back button. The next button would be my menu button which causes me to go in safe mode on boot without me touching it. I just reported one of my easiest most prominent experiences where I could remember all the details. I need to get a camera attached to my head so that I can record the video of when this happens just to prove that the way I am holding it is not affecting it. Sadly I am not a cyborg with on board video recording of my surroundings and the items I am interacting with.

Everyone, this issue has been lifted up to Samsung and our product team and we have received some samples. I have also submit a request to our product team to see if a setting can be added to turn this feature off.

I have 3 Fascinates.
2 dont seem to have this screen shot problem.
But the third one does. Third one has the most 'market' apps including games on
it. The 2 that dont have this problem only have a couple of market apps.
Probably just a coincidence, but you never know.
Heh Verizon. How about getting samsung to release android 2.3 gingerbread for
the Fascinate ??? that will probably fix most of these straggling type issues !!!!

Mine is doing this, as well, and it is VERY annoying!! I've called three times about this phone and it's latest round of issues (i.e. screen captures, missed phone calls, quirky text messaging) and all I was told to do was download the latest software (which I have) or that I need another fascinate (PHONE NUMBER FOUR!!) I really don't want another one of these things because they are plagued with problems. I'd rather have something else, but I'm being told that I CAN'T HAVE ANYTHING ELSE.... So disgusted with this phone and Verizon!

I too am having the same problem with my samsung fascinate. I am dealing with it and waiting for a fix. I'm really posting to say, I think it's interesting to see most people blaming a software issue or a hardware issue on Verizon and not the developer of the phone or the developer of the software. I've seen numerous posts about how they hate verizon and how verizon is screwing everyone because they can't fix this issue...the random screenshot issue is not a verizon problem, it's either a samsung problem or a android software issue. don't be so quick to knock the number 1 wireless provider in the country just because your samsung phone likes taking pictures of your screen. I've been a verizon customer for 5 years and will never ever switch to any other carrier...bottom line, verizon is the best there is and if another carrier tries to tell you otherwise it's because they are trying to right a sinking ship...just saying.

There is some truth to what you say, but there are also posts on this community regarding Verizon blatant disregard to truly address the issues with the Fascinate. Replacing the hardware that carries the same software; whether it's the software or the hardware, the means at which VZW addresses it's customers concerns is of great issue on this community board too.
There are MANY posts here that speak to the poor customer service provided by the phone centers, the rude employees in the corporate stores, the misleading promises to address concerns; only to not have anyone from the company follow up. So, I wouldn't discount the complaints as unfairly directed at Verizon instead of the manufacturer or programmer. Verizon shares responsibilty as the CELLULAR PROVIDER on this one too. Once, you see a trend, stop denying it's "not a wide spread problem" and listen to your customers and ADDRESS the issue.
"If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...." IJS!

I agree a hardware issue would be more Samsung. I do not agree with the fact that software issues would only be Samsung or android developers. Please think about the fact 2.2 was delayed because Verizon wanted to modify it before they passed it to us. They slap their own stock apps and make some other changes like and OEM would do with a computer to "customize it" to look like Verizon made this special phone for us.
I personally would love to see Verizon release the original software that Samsung released for this phone. Then those of us that are more savvy could choose Verizon or Samsung. Then we would know the problems we are seeing on the Samsung software are Samsung's fault! Just the opposite if the Samsung software worked fine and the Verizon software started showing problems we would know that something Verizon did during customizing it messed up the phone.
I know I will never see this happen, but please understand that Verizon doesn't just give you the phone without messing with it. They love to customize them, turn off features, install features they think you should pay them for, and the list goes on. The worst is when they toss on items that you can't uninstall. There a few things I never plan to use, I would love uninstall, but they have the phone locked to not allow such activity.

Why the rage? You have a feature to take screenshorts.
On fascinate 1 I slide my finger down and press power button at the same time. Very useful. Start enjoying it.
