I was attempting to do the recommended software update but I just see an error on the System Updates section that says 'Download Failed'. When I click 'Retry Download', nothing happens. Any idea how to get the retry to work?
Thanks!

Have you tried to reboot your phone, Justin?

Yeah, I thought that might clear the failed download, but it didn't work. Still says 'Download Failed'.

Why would you be trying to do an update on a brand new phone? The Nexus just went on sale today.
There was a software maintenance update to Android 4.0.2 that came out either last night or today. The phone wouldn't be updated until the user activated the phone.

Was the system updates section that you checked in your notifcation bar on in your System Updates section of "Settings"? If it was in the notification bar, have you checked through Settings>About Phone>System Updates?

It was not in the notification bar, it was in Settings>About Phone>System Updates, and that's where I'm getting the error.
Time to use a fancy new ICS feature: Error Screenshot

Servers are over-loaded. Give it about another few hours and try again.
I had that problem and I just gave up and waited an hour and tried again and everything went through fine.
It happened to both my GSM version(4.0.0 to 4.0.1) and my LTE version (4.0.0 to 4.0.2). If it still doesn't work when everything dies down you may need to do a factory reset and try again. If you are still getting an error you may need to contact Google(which honestly is better than contacting CSR of Verizon since they control the updates, and the device support and they should know everything about the device.)

Forgot about that. There should be an address somewhere for the servers where you could download it manually and put them on your phone and apply the update. Been a while since I had my Nexus One, and Nexus S.
