My phone has discarged is just over 2 hours! All settings are normal, battery usage noted screen 41% exchange 25% and email 21%. While screen goes dark, it appears the screen is still using juice in the background.
i believe there is a reported issue with exchange email accounts in 4.2.2 which can be solved by deleting your exchange account and then adding it back. looks like you have a significant amount of drain from your email accounts. how many to you have running? screen on 41% ok. but how much time was your screen actually on. you say your battery died in just over two hours, so i would assume you had your screen on approximately 50min to an hour.
report back after deleting and adding back your exchange email account.
I don't use Exchange, and I'm eating the entire battery in less then two hours. The upper third of the display is HOT when the display is not on. Plugging it in powered up is useless since the current drain is higher than the capacity of the charger. Plugged it into my 2AMP charger for the my tablet - still not enough.
Called VZW and the tech indicated the drain issue is all over their internal forums, but no solution other than they will send you a replacement phone.
I was reading elsewhere that one guy thinks the display is still really on, just gone to black.
BATTERY:
Screen 27% (off mostly)
Android System 14%
Android OS 9%
I'm having the same problem - extended life battery drains fully in about an hour and phone gets really HOT. Exchange is using 46% of battery. After speaking with Verizon and Samsung, they are sending me a replacement phone. Going to see if deleting and re-installing exchange solves the problem.
I'll try the exchange fix, On this battery charge (spare battery) exchange is 37% of battery usage. only using one exchange and on gmail account. My phone is also hot near the top back.
I am experiencing the same charging and overheating problems.
I removed all Exchange accounts and without setting them back up, it still shows Exchange Services at 34%.
I hope a fix is determined very soon....and a replacement phone shouldn't count as a fix.
I'm having the exact same problem: a freshly OTA updated Galaxy Nexus (with Exchange services running). I left my phone at home all day (charging) after the update. I turned it on, ran a couple of errands over a couple of hours, and it was dead by the time I got home. I also had the "hotness" issue Norfin was talking about.
uninstalling and re-installing exchange reduced the battery usage from 46% to 15%. :smileyhappy: However, the screen usage is now showing 59% and the battery drain issue hasn't improved. :smileysad: Any other suggestions?
Sad to report, I'm having the same issue. My phone hasn't left the charger today, and I'm at 1% battery. Only app I've randomly used is the calculator. The phone will charge when it's powered off, turn it back on and zoom! goes the charge.Top half of my phone is hot, like the above comments have stated, too.
In the time it's taken me to write this, my phone is now at 0%. I haven't touched it!!!
Same here...at first, it was saying that it was an espn app that I have, so I uninstalled it, rebooted, and charged it fully. Guess what..... 2 hours later, same deal. This time it was saying that a ps3 app was draining the battery, so I did the same thing, uninstalled, rebooted, and charged it. Now, again 2 hours later its saying that google + is using the majority of the batter, but I can't uninstall it. Also, it feels crazy hot. Anyone have a fix for this?
so far the only thing i have tried that works is this:
goto SETTINGS
then to APPs
then swipe to your left 2 times to go to the tab ALL
click on EXCHANGE SERVICES
then click the button DISABLE.
warning this will affect u getting emails. but will not drain your battery as before.
****UPDATE****
since disabling exchange services my battery life is back to normal. i don't receive emails from my corporate account but yahoo and gmail still work fine.
did the exchange fix work? and if only somewhat try and change your exchange email settings from push to syncing every 15 minutes.
I'm having the same battery drain issue after upgrading to 4.2.2. Except for me, the battery meter claims Maps is the offending app. I tried the Exchange deactivation as suggested but I'm still having the same problem. And it still says Maps.
I hope a fix is pushed out quickly because the phone is basically useless after lasting for about an hour on a full charge!
Yeah my phone also drains really quickly. I even turn off the data network and it still drains the battery
Deleted Exhange and re-installed and that seemed to do the trick. Left the phone on all night and seems to be discharging normally. The heat is gone also. I cycled through three recharges on two separate batteries. Perhaps the apps that are showing up as offenders need to be deleted and re-installed.
Tried a couple more things, but didn't help. About 3 hours ago, I uninstalled the updates to google maps. Thought I would try that since you can't uninstall the app. Before it was showing that was using the battery the most. I charged it fully, and have been on battery for about an hour, and the battery is at 91% which is about right I guess. I'll update later if it still seems better.
I guess that didn't totally work. It seems better, but not as good as it was before the update. 2 hours later I'm it 45%, I guess that would be about 3 hours....but I am not even using it at all. I used to get a whole day with light use, or about 8 hours with moderate use. Anyone found something that works?
Add me to the list. I've tried the "delete & re-add Exchange account" idea, but to no avail. I have an extended battery, and while my phone seems to last somewhat longer than before I tried the Exchange fix, it's still nowhere near what it was before the 4.2.2 update.
I'm also noticing things like general slowness, not getting notifications about incoming emails (though they show when I look at the account) and the phone not securing itself after the preset amount of time has passed.
The bells and whistles of 4.2.2 are nice, but certainly not worth all this grief. Is there any way to remove it and go back to 4.1.1?
I caved in and called Verizon. They are sending me a replacement. I hope this one doesn't do the same thing...
OMG, me too! Android operating system, or Google + seem to be at the top of the draining list, and screen, but I don't keep it on hardly at all, always at darkest. So frustrating. I will try the exchange, deleting and re-doing. Got to have that for work. I may have to get a replacement, can't work like this. Any rumors of a fix?
Is anyone at Verizon reading this forum? Seriously, you brick our phones and not even a peep here? I was a first day purchaser, so I laid out $300 - a little progress report sure would be nice.
I also contacted Samsung by email since they are closed for phones devices on Sunday. I received a bot-generated response. So darn helpful! Everyone call Samsung and complain on Monday - 888-987-4357
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for contacting Samsung Telecommunications America.
After reviewing your email, I understand that your phone’s battery is draining quickly.
We are committed to your satisfaction and we will help you with the resolution for the issue.
I will provide you some tips to increase the battery life, if you still have same issue we will inform you about the next step at the end of the email.
Make sure that,
1. You are using the battery and charger came along with your phone.
2. The firmware on the phone is up to date with the latest available
version. Please provides us with the current base band version on your
phone. You can find it in the location Applications >>Settings >> About
phone.
3. Make sure that Wi-Fi, blue tooth and GPS are turned off on your
phone if they are not in use.
4.. Reduce the brightness of your Phone and do not use live wall papers
as they consume more battery power.
5. Do not wait until your battery is completely depleted before charging
your device. Repeating this process of a complete discharge and recharge
can over time reduce the storage capacity of any battery.
6.Is there any noticeable physical damage to the device?. Physical
damage can include (but not limited to) missing, bent, or broken battery
contacts. Remove the battery and inspect all contacts on the device and
battery to ensure they are intact and free of damage or debris. Inspect
all accessories to ensure there is no physical damage and they are in
good working order.
7. Check the LDI (Liquid Damage Indicator) located inside the battery
well and on the battery itself. LDI indicators should be solid white or
white with visible pink/purple X's.If the LDI is solid pink/purple/red,
it indicates the device has been exposed to moisture and is not covered
under Samsung's limited warranty.
8. Samsung batteries are rechargeable Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries.
Lithium Ion batteries are among the most popular batteries used in
consumer electronic equipment. One of the main reasons for popularity is
the fact that lithium ion batteries do not build a memory. This term is
commonly misapplied to cases in which a battery depletes faster than
expected. Talk time and standby time ratings are measured using optimal
conditions, meaning no conditions exist that require extra use of power.
9. Has the device been exposed to extreme weather conditions? Samsung
devices come equipped with a safety feature that will automatically
power down the device once it reaches a critical level
10. Perform a factory data reset on the device to fix the issue. Most of
the issues can be resolved by performing hard reset(Factory Reset).Your
phone settings will be changed to default factory settings once you
perform Hard reset. Hard reset erase all downloaded applications and
personal files, including music, pictures, videos, and documents, that
did not come pre-installed on the device. Paid applications can be
re-downloaded free of charge if the same Google account is used after
the reset. Back up the data on your phone and perform a factory data
reset. To perform Factory data reset, go to Applications >> Settings >> backup and reset >> Factory data reset.
11.There are two reasons for the issue. One is the issue with the
battery and the second is the issue with the internal circuitry of the
device. Let us first confirm whether the issue is with the internal
circuitry of the device or the battery. Try charging the device using
tested battery available at the carrier store. If the tested battery can
hold charge for long time we can confirm that the issue is with the
battery. In this case contact Samsung voice support team to get the
battery replaced if the device is in warranty. Please contact voice
support team to file a service request for your phone if the issue
persists after trying with tested battery. At your earliest convenience,
please call Samsung Customer Support by phone at our toll free number
1-888-987-4357, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday

I too have been having the issue with the Exchange service draining the battery. I contacted Verizon and they thought it was a bad battery. They did not have any in stock to send me a new one and they tried to contact Samsung to get it replaced. Samsung parts department was however closed today. So i told the rep about this thread and told her I was pretty confident that it was a problem with the software due to the patch and that I was reading about other people reporting the same issue. She got a 3 way call going with a Samsung rep who told me he had not hear do the problem yet. He told me I could call "Advance Support" on Monday and gave me the number: 1-888-987-4357. I think the update is so new that no one has reported the problem directly to them before today. I would suggest we all call Samsung tomorrow at this number and let them know whats happening. Not sure what they are going to be able to do to resolve it short of a hotfix to the patch. I disabled the Exchange app all together which resolved the issue but thats a bandaid not a fix. I guess we will find out.
Same issue as others... checked other Android discussion boards - seems it's not solely a Verizon or Samsung issue. Update causing problems on other devices at other carriers as well. THAT CERTAINLY DOESN'T EXCUSE VERIZON FOR NOT WEIGHING IN ON THIS DISCUSSION THREAD. Maybe I can go get a new phone for free before they bother to look at this thread?
This is a customer-to-customer forum. While Verizon reps occasionally respond, it is sporadic and not to every post. Even when they do respond, it's usually a week or longer after a post has been left.
I'm experiencing the exact same thing and I deleted and recreated all my Exchange account but it still taking 57-60% of my battery and causing the phone to heat up. I had to disable my Exchange Services to solve the problem but now I can't get emails from work. I would consider this a major bug and require immediate assistance from Samsung.
Same issue here - also deleted maps and reinstalled - which seemed to drop the map usage a bit, but I think that's because by default - Latitude is not enabled.
Also experiencing the heat buildup, and showing screen usage at 42% of teh battery use, even though display has only been lit for a few minutes.
Calling verizon now.
Mine got so hot I could feel the battery ballooning and looked swollen. When I called Verizon, they didn't do any troubleshooting with me, only asked me for my address of where to ship the replacement. I'm not sure this will fix the problem, but with my phone running so hot for the past couple days, I think it might be a good idea to stop using it.
After deleting the Google Maps updates, as well as removing the Exchange account, mine would last about 2 hours. I can't go without having my Exchange account on the phone, or it not being able to hold a longer charge. Hopefully with the new one, I don't have these issues.
A factory reset has solved the problem. In fact, battery life is better than before the 4.2.2 update. I strongly suggest you try a factory reset. If you choose the "backup" and "restore" options, it will automatically reinstall all your applications after the reset. The only thing I lost was my Beautiful Widgets theme (big deal) but otherwise it was pretty seamless. Good luck!
I also had the same issue. Verizon reps were not helpful at all, claiming it must be the battery and that software could not have been the problem. I was also told there were no reports of battery problems due to the 4.2.2 update. As such, I did my own research, performed the exchange fix last night, charged the phone, and everything is back to normal from a battery standpoint. Exchange services is now at 2% of the current battery use.
I tried something different after I heard the exchange problem. I checked my battery usage under the setting and saw Exchange was using about 40%. I forced stopped it and then disabled it. After which I rebooted the phone and then re-enabled Exchange and the battery drain problem ceased.
Odd that this isn't more widespread. The system update must not like some combination installed apps/user preferences that causes this. Verizon certainly does tests to make sure such things don't occur, but it's close to impossible to account for all user configurations.
I experienced the same problem after the upgrade. The exchange service ate the battery up in just about 3 hours and the phone got very hot to the touch. I uninstalled my corporate exchange email account and reinstalled it. I think it has fixed the problem.
Thanks for the tutorial. Interesting tidbit. Who is it that removes the comments that are disparaging to Verizon? Other customers?
Anyone can report any post they think is in violation of the forum's Terms of Service by clicking the Report Abuse button. The forum Moderators will review the posts (which sometimes can take a while, depending on what-all is going on) and return them intact if the post doesn't violate the forum's ToS, return them with editing (to remove what violated the ToS), or delete them altogether if the entire post violated the ToS.

For anyone who did not get the issue resolved by disabling exchange, or maps. I think I got 2 more things to try. I uninstalled AVG anti-virus and turned off developer options at the same time. My battery life seems to be doing better, and is not nearly as hot. I like the screen to stay on while plugged in, which is why I had developer options on.
Did this work for you?
I may have a fix for a few of you using Google Currents..or have it installed...open the app and go to settings and take the check mark out of "Enable background sync" field.....that helped me greatly..
I'm still draining like crazy. On the way to work, I had it plugged in on a car charger, it drained 12% with it plugged in!
I've done the exchange uninstall and reinstall that seems to be ok. fluctuating in it's usage, but mostly lower.
It looks like it is all Android OS. 24%. How do you fix that? Google + is back up there, I've uninstalled updates and disabled.
Y'all mention a factory reset. That scares me. Can someone, give directions on how to save everything and reinstall? Someone above mentioned it worked and they did a backup/restore. I'm afraid. How exactly does that work. Does it save to your computer? Can you alternately, drag over everything to your computer then drag it back?
Thanks, every time I try to do something like a reset, I screw it up so I am very afraid to try anything without detailed instructions.
Doing a factory reset will be no different than getting a new phone. Without knowing what you would like to keep, it makes it harder to tell you what you would need to do in order to keep everything. I will say that since the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have a external SD card, all your photos, text, and everything else stored on the phone will be wiped with a factory reset.
That being said, you can connect your phone to your PC or mac, and drag files over to store them. If you do, I would suggest entire folders. After the reset, you can pretty much do the opposite to get them back on your phone. What I did when I did my last factory reset, I took screen shots of my screens so that I could restore them exactly like they were.
Use this link and it will help with backing up photos, videos, music etc. Also, make sure that you are backing up your apps so that they will download after the reset.
Hope this helps!
Thanks to everyone whe offered solutions here. The 4.2.2 update turned my device into a hand-warmer but I think I have it back to normal. It's a coporate device and I think I'm one of the "lucky" first ones to get the update in our org. I just sent this email internally summarizing how I got past my 4.2.2 issues and thought it might help those who come here later. Here it is:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My phone seems to have normalized. I tried a lot of things but suspect it was deletion/recreation of my Exchange account coupled with disabling/enabling Exchange Services and multiple reboots that finally cured the runaway process issue. Here’s a summary of what I did and learned:
· Once the 4.2.2 update has been applied and the device reboots:
o the phone will get HOT!
o the battery will run down in short order (within an hour or so).
o Exchange Services will dominate the CPUIf you go to Settings, Battery you should see that Exchange Services is consuming more battery power than anything else by far
· To immediately save the battery charge:
o Turn sync off (you won’t get incoming email automatically), Bluetooth, & GPS
o go to Settings, Apps, Running and disable Exchange services
o it was suggested on the link below to uninstall Google Maps but I was only able to uninstall updates to that app since it’s part of the initial image, not downloaded so I don’t know if that helped at all
· To fix Exchange Services
o Note your email account settings
§ You AD account (domain\youracct), use port 443 – SSL, host:<company Exchange host> – I think the rest are defaults
o Delete your exchange account from Email Settings
o Shutdown the phone, remove the battery, push the sim card to unlatch it and remove it for 10 seconds or more
o Replace the sim card and battery and power up (not sure if the sim pull did anything but Verizon support recommended it and like chicken soup, it couldn’t hurt…)
o Recreate your Exchange email account in Email Settings
o Enable Exchange Services
o Shutdown/Restart the phone (not sure if this is necessary but again it doesn’t hurt)
· To be sure the fix worked:
o Fully charge the devicethis will clear out the battery usage stats
o use the device as you normally do for a while (set sync and other options as you like)
§ it should not get hot as it did immediately after the update
§ Settings, Battery should not show Exchange Services as a major power consumer (or even at all – Screen should be the biggest power draw unless you’re running Bluetooth and/or GPS or another normally intensive app)
I am still having issues with Settings, Display, Sleep config not sticking. I use an app called Stay Awake which keeps the screen on when plugged in (very useful in the car) and it was not working yesterday afternoon. Every time I have checked the sleep setting, nothing was set. This morning, I set it to max of 10 minutes and Stay Awake seemed to be working for the drive in. I’m sure I will find some other 4.2.2-related app anomalies but the device seems to be mostly back to normal now.
One other thing I learned is that when Exchange Service was turning the device into a hand-warmer, it was discharging the battery faster than I could recharge it from the USB port of my laptop. I didn’t have my AC charger with me so I don’t know if having it plugged in there would have made a difference. I suggest having a full charge and your AC charger at hand before allowing the 4.2.2 update to be applied.
Most of the actions I took were discussed here: <link to this forum>
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was able to stop the battery rundown by only disabling exchange, rebooting, then re-enabling exchange.I know deleting and setting up accounts can be a drag, so try that first. Also I didn't need to do anything else (uninstall map updates, remove SIM card, etc.)
You're mileage may vary. It's possible that more than one app or it's configuration may trigger the increased battery usage One should check to see which app(s) are actually consuming resources beyond the normal. This problem is not so widespread as it's not affecting every Galaxy Nexus receiving 4.2.2
This could have been avoided with a managed roll-out or some real user testing. Looking at this forum and all the wasted time we have all had to endure, it really is a pity we cannot get something in exchange - ex a free month or partial month of service. But I know that won't happen.
2-3 hours for a brand new battery. This is outrageous. I had to delete my corporate email account because Exchange was taking up 55% of the battery use. They've got until April 11 to fix this, or I'm going back to the iPhone.
Same here! Holy How.
I had the exact same batter drain problem happen to me today after installing the 4.2.2. OTA update. I got prompted to install the update shortly after 9am this morning (90% battery) and my phone was dead by noon after zero usage. I left it off and charged it for an hour in the afternoon, getting the battery up to 25%. After powering back on it was dead again in less than an hour.
Tonight after again plugging it back in I noticed Exchange reporting 57% battery usage. I've since deleted and re-added my Exchange account, and am really hopping that fixes it. We'll see what happens tomorrow, but certainly not a happy customer right now.
I did the uninstall exchange, sim and reinstalled sim and exchange,it is hot too, and now my phone won't take a charge when plugged in! WTF! I had put in a 100% battery before bed, plugged in and it was down to 16% when I woke, and now it is plugged in again and it is going down still.
I'd previously uninstalled exchange, and reinstalled exhange, still had the battery drain in 2 hours.
It shows exchange as 4% so there are others more than that. Screen and Android OS are the main ones.
I just don't know what to do.
As near as I can figure there is an issue with the 4.2.2 update and the exchange services at least with certain exchange server configurations and upgrading the corporate settings during the 4.2.2 update. After the 4.2.2 update and it upgrades the corporate account settings something is not right in the updated settings causing the exchange services on the local phone to continuously run using a huge amount of processing time and quickly draining the battery. This also causes the area near the top of the phone to become very hot.
I was able to fix my problem by disabling the exchange services, removing the corporate account, shutting down, removing sim card for 10 seconds (likley not needed), restarting and re-adding corporate account. Phone is now operating normally, exchange services not running abnormally and no battery drain.
Just a heads up for those who are seeing battery drain but don't use Exchange: I saw someone on another forum mention that there was a problem with HD Widgets where it would constantly crash and restart, pegging the CPU at constant ~100% usage (with corresponding heat-up of the phone). I'm not sure of exactly what part of HD Widgets was causing the issue, but when I uninstalled it, the problem instantly disappeared. CPU usage dropped to normal, and it's charging at a normal rate again.
Thanks edevries, I'll do that, I see I have HD widgets too. Also, I see that I can now charge on my computer or car, while before it would drain too fast to keep up. I'd done the major exchange uninstall and reinstall.
I've just unistalled HD widgets. fingers crossed...
