Anyone else noticing that the google navigation app locks up now? I'm able to enter an address but when it goes in to start the navigation the app locks up.

If you searched the forums, you would have seen that there were previous posts about this very topic. I myself had that exact problem, and here is what I did to fix it.

Uninstall Google Maps and Street View (I was only able to uninstall the last update.)

Turn phone off.

Pull battery.

Put battery back in.

Turn phone on.

Go into market and install Google Maps and update Street View.

Turned phone off.

Turned phone on.

Turn on Wireless and connect to network.

Turn on GPS, both Standalone and Google Location Services.

I waited about 20-30 seconds.

Went into Google Navigation.

Typed in an address and in about 5 seconds, the Navigation Screen went away, and it cme up with the map.

I turned wireless off.

Went into Navigation and it worked fine.

Turned off GPS.

A couple hours later, I turned GPS on, then went right into navigation, and typed in a different address and it worked.

I am not saying this is a fix for it, but it has worked for me so far, and that was over a week ago.

I had the same problem as you and I cleared the cache to Maps and downloaded the latest update to Maps (6.0.1) the problem went away. Hope that helps you.

I cleared the cache and did all the updates and all that first, and it didn't help.. Not sure if it will for everyone or not.

Same issue here!  Navigation freezes once you type/say an address.  I bought the phone primarily as a GPS while I am away on business!!! Arghh!!!

Did you uninstall/reinstall Google Maps?  I had the same issue until I did this.

RunSilent,

Yes, I removed/reinstalled Google Maps last night and navigation started working again.  :smileyvery-happy:

RunSilent, Yes, I removed/reinstalled Google Maps last night and navigation started working again.

 UPDATE

Second usage after the reinstall and the phone froze.  I had to pull the battery to be able to use it again.

I got an update to Maps...it worked once but still locks up the phone.  Even if I can get back to the home screen (after entering navigation) if the phone screen turns off (timeout) the phone is locked.  Battery out/Battery in and turn the phone on is the only way to get it working again.

Have you done the steps with turning on wifi? I did that exact process, and mine has not had a problem since.

I ran these instructions after my second failure:
1. Uninstalled Google Maps
 2. Installed other gps apps (waze and trial version of Sygic).  I did this when I was fed up with Google Maps and was looking for alternatives.
 3. Out of curiousity I reinstalled Google Maps again and it started working.
Waze still works but Google Navigation does not.  I just went through the long instructions on page one.  It is working again but time will tell if it holds.

I ran the long reset procedure last night...it worked last night.  Shut off the phone...turned the phone on this morning and Google Maps is locked again!

Does it lock up if you turn wifi on and connect to a wireless network?

It only locks up with Google Navigation.   I don't have a problem running wifi.  I did notice that when I can escape Navigation (before it locks) there are multiple services for Google Maps running (should be one service with multiple processes).  I can kill one but not the other.  Killing the service has no affect...I return to Navigation and it is still stuck on the splash screen.

What I meant was, does it still lock up if you turn on wifi and connect to a wireless network and then try Google Navigation?

Ah!  No, Navigation does not work with Wifi enabled.  It did when I ran through the long list (in this thread) but after shutting the phone down for the night, Navigation has not worked since (w/ and w/o Wifi).

Wow, I am at a loss to what is going on. Have you cleared the data for MAPS? I know when you uninstall it and reinstall it, it helps but I am wondering if there is data left behind after you remove it, and it just installs it back to the same locations.

I too had this issue.  Uninstall/reinstall did not work for me initially.  Here is what did work for me:

 1. Uninstalled Google Maps
 2. Installed other gps apps (waze and trial version of Sygic).  I did this when I was fed up with Google Maps and was looking for alternatives.
 3. Out of curiousity I reinstalled Google Maps again and it started working.

So, I'm not sure why the inital uninstall/reinstall of Google Maps didn't work and why after installing Waze and Sygic it started working.  Perhaps there are some libraries or something that got updated with Waze or Sygic that "fixed" an issue with Google Maps.  Regardless, all 3 nav apps are working, so hopefully one out of 3 will work!

Out of context for purposes of this thread, but my initial impression with Sygic is positive.  I like how it downloads the maps to the SD card.  This means no data connection required while driving and the routing calculations are extremely quick.

As an FYI, my phone is running Android Samsung Fascinate  (SCH-I500) running 2.3.5 firmware

VICTORY, so easy, I wanted to look up an address and even knowing I was having the same problems you were I said let me try it real quick. I was in maps and it redirected me to the wifi settings and I'm like .... ok wtf.  baffled what does wifi have to do with it so down at the bottom it says advanced so what else is there to do so I hit it . then it seemed like the only thing to do was check the static IP. Guess what GPS awesomeness . thing is working like lightening. Seriously why can't verizon or samsung tell you something so simple. I don't know what static ip is but god bless it any who. So try that. I'm so happy I don't have to do a factory reset what a hassle. Hope this helps
