I woke up to a frozen phone yesterday. I plug it in every night before I go to bed and unplug in the AM. Upon unplugging my phone it was frozen. I pulled the battery put it back in a pressed the power button a short buzz and froze on the Galaxy S3 screen, repeated this step several times then the phone no longer responded "DEAD". Tested the battery and it was fully charged. Called Samsung Tech support they had me do a few things no luck the told me to go to my local Verizon store and have them re flash the phone. So I did they did not know what that meant. However they told me that it was still under warranty and that I will have a new one in a few days. I was totally surprised as I purchased it from Amazon Thumbs up to Verizon. My ?'S as I have been reading all sorts of things on the Internet. Is it bad to leave the phone plugged in all night? Does any one know what may have happened? I have not downloaded any thing new for sometime. All of my apps are from the play store. Will you damage the phone if you use anything other than a samsung cable? Thank you for you comments and suggestion.

"Reflashing" refers to overwriting the software on the device with a fresh version. It's like reinstalling Windows on your computer. It's disheartening that the Verizon reps didn't know that themselves 😕

Leaving your phone plugged in overnight is completely fine and should not have caused that issue. It sounds like a critical file in your operating system somehow became corrupted and it happened to occur during the night when it was plugged in. It could have happened any time though.

If the issue started with your OS freezing then it really does sound like a software-based problem—your physical device should be fine. Try going to a different VZW store with more knowledgeable reps? Or else just get a replacement like your reps suggested.

The built-in abilities of Android (or even VZW backup assistant) can only back up contacts, a list of installed apps, media, and low-level things like that. What you're trying to do—back up an image of the entire OS, or at least back up actual app data—cannot be accomplished without exploiting your phone. And stuff like that, I've unfortunately come to find, cannot be discussed on these forums. It is possible though.
