No keyboard autocorrect after updating S3 to Jelly Bean

After updating my S3 to Android 4.1.1, autocorrect on both the Samsung and Swype keyboards stopped working. They would still show possibilities in the prediction bar, but they would not automatically select the most likely one when you hit the space bar.

I then downloaded the Jelly Bean keyboard and autocorrect did work on that. However, for various reasons, I would prefer to use the Samsung or Swype keyboards. On the Jelly Bean keyboard settings, there is Text Correction > Auto-Correction, and you can change it to be off, modest, or aggressive, which I believe is the way the other keyboards worked under the ICS OS.

However, the AutoCorrection setting does not exist on the Samsung and Swype keyboards. In the Samsung kbd, for example, the closest thing is Predictive Text, which gives you a bunch of options, like Word Completion, Spell Correction, Next Word Predition, Auto-Substitution, all of which I turn on, but to no avail.

Do I need to update to new Samsung and Swype keyboards now that I've updated the OS to Jelly Bean? I downloaded the Jelly Bean keyboard, which works, after I updated the OS. If I do need to update the other keyboards, I don't know how to do that - I went looking for Samsung Keyboard in the Play Store but didn't find anything.

Thanks for any ideas you can offer!

I am having the same issue. I use my Galaxy SIII for business and I type quite a few emails via ActiveSync. Autocorrect has been a lifesaver and I have come to rely on it for speed and accuracy.

Please fix this quickly....

same issue here!!!  My s3 updated today and now when texting via 3x4 keyboard i have to choose each word instead of having it chosen it for me. But everything else, while tedious, is still impressive.  Please fix!!!!!

Exact same issue . . . horrible.  This is a major feature for all of us to not have been tested on their most popular phone using their most advanced operating system . . .

Looking around online this seems to be an issue with the upgrade that MANY people are having.  Someone on a google site said that they called Samsung, and Samsung said Verizon removed the feature due to usage stats.  If so, Verizon, please bring back auto-correct!  It is the most useful thing about text-message typing, and if I thought it was frustrating before when it picked the wrong word, well, that was ten times less frustrating and embarrassing than looking like I can't pass a simple elementary school spelling test, or don't have a piece of equipment smart enough to know that a word is misspelled. People understand predictive text and auto-correct pick the wrong word these days- misspelling is still considered unprofessional and unacceptable, especially when so many of us use our phones and texting plans for work.  I mean, seriously, even my old blackberry could auto-correct spelling, and that thing couldn't even make phone calls by the end of my contract with it!

I have been a Verizon customer for 7 years now, and this would have to be the most disappointed I have been in a product that I got from them.

Note- the text box that I am typing this into has a spell-check function... really Verizon?!?

PLEASE let me know if this will be sorted out in an update, or if I'm stuck with a piece of malfunctioning equipment for 2 years.

Here is the link to the discussion I mentioned above.  I am refering to comment #5.

Has anybody tried clearing data and cache on the keyboard to see if that helps?

Hi.  I'm not sure I understand, or maybe I'm not having the issue.  I use SWYPE, and you can have "Next Word Prediction" on/off under settings (based on previously entered text).  Mine does automatically enter the first choice after hitting space bar.  I don't know if this might be because I had grabbed a beta version of SWYPE before the JB update.  Before I did that though, I had tried using TouchPal (from Play market), and it was a VERY close substitute for SWYPE.  Just minor differences that are a little annoying until you get used to them (like placement of symbols and stuff).  Maybe give that a try?  Or maybe talk to SWYPE developers (swype.com)?

DieAnn- The issue is with the software keyboard that comes installed on the phone.  The latest update made that particular keyboard useless as it no longer auto-corrects, it is either just saving any misspelled word in the dictionary, or ignoring the spelling mistake completely. I did not generally use the swiping feature as it did not generally get me the word I was looking for.

Demmo- that was the first thing I tried, and it did not fix the issue at all- in fact, it might have made it worse (either that or I was getting more frustrated... I realize my previous post was quite heated!)

I have found that you can download "JellyBean Keyboard" for free from the Play Store (I think I'm running version 4.2 but I can't find a way to check), and set that as the default keyboard.  It means you have to waste space on your phone for something that should come with it, however, it works just like the original keyboard did before the update.  I have also tried the swiping on that, and found that is was much more successful at choosing the word that I meant.

If you are old enough to remember this, you can also download Graffiti for Android as a keyboard for those people who were fast at that during the Palm Pilot days.  I have found that I don't like that as much on the phone with my fingers, but I do enjoy it on my tablet. It doesn't have as intuitive a spell-check though.
