State of Rhode Island Buys Verizon, Sprint

Today, 8:20 AM   by Rich Brome

On the heels of New York State investigating the proposed AT&T purchase of T-Mobile USA, Rhode Island launched its own analysis of the deal last week. The state's attorney general said today in a statement: "We have concluded not only that the proposed deal is bad for consumers, but that the federal government is unlikely to stop it and incapable of effectively regulating such a powerful beast. Therefore we have decided to offer the necessary competition in the market ourselves, by buying Verizon and Sprint to form a new super-carrier to keep AT&T in its place." The governor issued a statement claiming confidence that the 1300% one-time tax hike necessary to the fund the $100 billion deal would be well-received by Rhode Island residents.
