S3 not reconnecting after going through deadzone

Let me start by saying that the reception on the S3, (already on second device and second sim card) has been pretty bad. My old Droid 2 Global never had dropped calls while in the city limits (Bozeman, MT), or my office building, but the S3 has significant trouble making and keeping calls while in my office. I usually need to hustle to the front of the building to keep a call from dropping when it starts to break up.
This last weekend I was traveling and on two separate occasions, I had my S3 completely drop its network connection. This was likely due to poor reception, but the problem that followed hasn't happened before. I was on the move through Billings, MT and when it dropped the connection it never tried to recover. The phone just never got a signal, even out in the open in the middle of town. I was able to fix it by cycling Airplane Mode, but there shouldn't need to be any intervention on my part. Since getting home, I've update the software to the latest (not the one from early June that was causing connectivity problems) and performed a hard reset to prevent any possible conflicts. Reception is still awful, but the radio not reconnecting seems like a possible hardware problem. Has anyone experienced similar problems?
