Software update issues

I try to update my software and it says "to check for software updates, go to settings, about device when service is available" I have service available and that is where I went. Any ideas??

Did you touch "Software update" at the top of the "About device" screen?

Yes and that is the message I get.... "to check for software updates, go to settings, about device when service is available"

Are you connecting to a Verizon Wireless tower and have the cellular data connection turned on? In my experience, the phone needs to be on an active line and connected to the 3G/4G network to search for system updates.
