I have been a loyal customer with Verizon for almost 10 years now and have been happy with the service up until now. I upgraded from my Blackberry to the Nexus in February. Right off the bat I had issues with the signal dropping every now and then. I was assured that in April and update was coming out that would fix all issues, Well, I got the 4.0.4 update and things just went downhill. My signal drops every time I go to make a phone call, email, text, web surf, etc. So, I went to the store to discuss this issue. They swapped my SIM card and sent me a refurb. Nothing has changed.
I have pulled the battery and SIM card, and I have also done a factory reset. Nothing helps.
I basically have a phone that I cannot use. I called Verizon two days ago and had a ticket opened to have this issue resolved and no change. I have 2 small children and also use my phone for work. I cannot have a phone that does not work and am at wits end on what further action I can take. So frustrated!

Mine goes from full white bars with a 4G/3G symbol then drops to gray with an x every time I use it. Maybe I should request another replacement. Not sure what else there is to do..

OK, well i dunno if this will help, but it has at least provided me with a constant signal and waaaay more battery life.
I, like many of you was still experiencing signal loss after getting the 4.0.4 update and factory resetting my phone. I went to my Verizon store yesterday and they said there was a ticket submitted as of 6/6 (same day) that will go to Samsung who will need to come up with a patch or something.
The guy said that in the meantime the temp fix is to DL an app called "4G Toggle". Once you have it, open it and change your network mode to: CDMA (this is locking you into the 3G network so u can get and maintain a constant signal)
The guy said that it looks like the software on the phone is having issues with deciding what to do with the 3G (CDMA) and 4G (LTE) signals.... so it is constantly disconnecting and reconnecting and running down your battery.
It isn't a perm fix, but at least my phone works like a real phone, and doesn't burn through my battery so fast. Hope this helps... at least until there is a patch.

That guy snowed you over like it is nobody's business. That app does nothing but take you to what verizon already has on the phone. The app says so itself. It is nothing but a shortcut. He basically told you that you are paying for 4g but can't use it and you don't even realize it. Look how long it took to get 4.0.4. Look how long it took verizon to push it out. Do you really think Verizon is going to let a samsung patch come out anytime soon? I just got a replacement phone...... No better than the one I am sending back tomorrow.

When you purchased your phone -- where you told that for the phone portion to work reliably that you where not allowed to use 4g?
I was not -- just seeing if anyone else was told. I almost feel like this was false advertisement.
Searching around told me to wait until 4.0.4 came out but it looks like Verizon was fighting Google (even had a Google engineer frustrated with it). I'm not in high hopes of Verizon fixing this within a reasonable period of time.

You are unaware how it works. When you initialize the call the operator already knows your location of the device. If the call drops they know where you are. Also if you are at home you can use your land line for emergency calls regardless if you have service or not. Unless you never had signal to begin with then that would be a problem.

Also regardless if you have GPS off it is ALWAYS ON for E911 purposes I might add. You can't turn it off unless your circumvent the software.

911 calls: I've participated in hundreds of code blues in a hospital....it's easier to respond for someone you don't know/work with etc. than someone in your family. When minutes count, you don't need to be dicking w/ a stupid phone....any brand/kind. How can you give CPR and check to see if you have a signal? Get real!!! It's hard enough to hit the right buttons let alone troubleshoot a cell.
I swear the first time my husband fell out due to arrhythmias(ventricular tachycardia) the ventricles of the heart may flutter or beat so fast that it's ineffective, so the blood pressure falls. I was so scared that my own pulse was bounding at my finger tips that I couldn't tell if it was his pulse or mine. So yeah.......having a screwed up phone could make all the difference to where someone might live or die.....need I say more?
That was years ago, Bill died in 93....so I now live in a black hole for cell phone coverage, Sprint verified the loss of signal by having a technician drive around my neighborhood. Switched carriers Verizon thought when they combined w/ Autel's towers that it would be a fix. I live in the heart of a city w/ no tall buildings near, but there are trees....IDK, I just found out I can get a refurbished network extender for $100 vs $260 for a new one, that I might do that when I get back from visiting my daughter in upstate Maine...supposedly covers 5k square feet.

Really? Like there isn't another cellphone or a landline someone can use. Like i said unless you are remotely in some place like Yellowstone Park. The Emergancy excuse doesn't fly in this day and age. The are way too people are today and the vast cellphones out there. If the signal problem bothers you a PREPAID $10 phone can do it without any funds in it. You can always just give CPR and let one of the other 100 people call 911.

Landlines are ALWAYS connected to 911 regardless if you have service or not. I always have a phone connected to the jack for that sole purpose. When I am out there are thousands of people and buildings with landlines.

I find your remarks flippant and crass, there are many who have given up their land lines and rely totally on their cells when not at work. When things go wrong, they might not be around others....a parking building after hours, emergencies at night time, neighbors not at home......they don't have to be out in the woods to not have anyone around....
IDK, why would be asking too much to get the service customers pay for, cell companies certainly like to be paid the full price every month.....on time.

And this is a choice which people make. No one makes it for them. By the nature of cellular, you are not guaranteed a signal anywhere. If access to emergency services is a priority for you, you should not give up your landline.
As long as edit: SMALL groups of people are able to prevent cellular service from improving in an area because "the towers take away from the aesthetics of the community or area", then you are going to have spotty service in areas. Imagine those same people trying to get rid of all the existing telephone poles in communities because they are eyesores, too. There are dead spots in my town which local providers have been fighting for YEARS to be allowed to construct new towers to relieve, yet they are met with protesters at town meetings whenever they present plans to the town board for towers and as a result, the plans get rejected.

Sort of defeats the purpose of being on "the most reliable network" if you can't get your phone to work and have to go and find someone else to use theirs.

say a major storm hits your city... power goes out... Cell phones are useless... landlines will still work. That's why it is required by law regardless if you have service or not 911 will always go through. You know that shooting that happened in Colorado? Do you know how many people dialed 911? Would it make a difference is 50 people dialed 911 than 10 people dialing 911? What about 1 person? In this day and age unless you are in the boon docks like Yellowstone there is no real reason to rely on a cellphone to dial 911.
I live in Hawaii and I have a phone plug into the Jack. I do not have landline service. My grandmother is 87 years old and when it rains here at times we will have power outages. Some of them can last 18 hours to 3 days. Do you think i'll rely on a cellphone?
Like rschnoor mentioned you should see Hawaii laws. Sprint just built a tower near my home, but it's in the least effective spot due to it being up against a mountain. They couldn't get approval for the past 6 years until they moved their location. They couldn't even lease or purchase land where they wanted when they finally got the approval. That doesn't include how they have to conform to not block ocean views...

I guess a couple of decades of emergency services work here gives me a different opinion than you. I am only basing my opinion on my experience in my part of the country. It may be different where you live.

I am having worse signal issues after the 4.0.4 patch as well. I got it day before yesterday and I have already seen the phone crash once and the 3g signal has just stopped working 3 times making me restart the phone. This has always happened at home or places I am used to using the phone. I can't get 4g as I live in a very rural area, so it's usually just a bar or two of 3g signal for me.
After testing this is obviously a new phone issue. I can make calls but not get data anymore and it doesn't come back on no matter where you move to try to get a better signal. I have even set it next to my girlfriends verizon mifi when it has been working fine and the phone has been non-responsive. My phone never had this problem before the new patch and it has happened three times in two days. In the couple months I have had the phone it had only crashed twice so I hope the one crash already is not going to become the norm. The phone in general is faster I just hope the signal thing gets sorted out quickly. I rely on my phone for my only source of email because of where I live and when the signal won't reconnect I am not reviving important messages.
This is the most awesome phone I have ever had. I kinda wish I hadn't updated because of this signal issue.

I'm also still having issues.
I'm becoming concerned that if I ever have to dial 911 that a few seconds in, I'll lose signal... have to wait... call again.. lose signal.. .call again. That could be a very bad day.

If you ever had to dial 911 before the call even connects they'll know where you are and they will call you back 100% of the time.
