Sometimes a sort of star appears at the top of the screen, and in the pull down menu there will be an advertisement that isn't sent as a text message but somehow appears on its own in the notification panel. What are these ads and how do I stop them? How to they have permission to access my phone? I don't think I gave any weird services my number. They are ads for things like dating sites.
Ideas?
thanks!

Is this the symbol you seeing or is it a different one?
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

No, it's a little star with a red center. If it shows up again I will pay more attention.
Thanks.

When you see the add or whatever it is, leave it on the screen and take a screenshot by holding down the back button and hitting the power button. This will take a screen shot, and then insert the image into this thread so others can see it.

Some quick googling and what that appears to be are ads from a company named AirPush. Some app developers contract with them as a source of additional revenue.
The ad mechanism was installed along with an app that you downloaded to your phone. The only way to remove it is to determine which app AdPush was bundled with and remove that particular app.

Use the stock Task Manager to see what apps are running, or if you do not see any, download an advanced task killer app from the market and try that. Those will show you more than the stock app as far as what is running, and then you could kill the task and see if the ads disappear.
