Why Update To Froyo!

Why update to Froyo? It would be logical for Verizon and Samsung to scrap the Froyo build and start Gingerbread. Froyo is already outdated, and would be a waste of time for Verizon to release it and then start work on Gingerbread. I am speculating the delays may be due to their intentions of releasing Gingerbread instead of Froyo. Now I know it sounds crazy, but it would make sense.

I just love it when "crazy makes sense".  LOL

lol.  How long do you think we'd be waiting to "officially" get Gingerbread if they haven't managed to push out Froyo yet?

We don't necessarily know at this point.  Samsung is definitely working on it for the regular Galaxy S as there was a recent leak and they haven't said whether or not it would make its way to the US

I can see where it would be easy to believe that, looking at the Fascinate alone. But pan back, and look at Samsung's record with updating firmware as a whole, and it's much easier to believe that the delay is Samsung's lack of concern over updating their products versus selling newer hardware. Why give the consumer the software upgrade for free, when you could sell them a new phone for several hundred bucks? The only other possible explanation is pure incompetence (which, now that I think about it in context of the released firmware with Samsung phones, may not be all that far fetched. My Omnia and Omnia II were both nearly unuseable in virgin form)

Why does it take HTC an average of under 60 days to release an update after froyo is released for half their phones, but it takes Samsung nearly 160 days to release it for only one out of nine phones?

This is why I wish Verizon would release a pure Google phone, like the Nexus S. But it will probably never happen - Verizon is to concerned with loading their phones with useless junk and their awful apps, like VCast and VZNavigator (the iPhone being the exception).

my omnia 2 was perfectly usable using touchwiz, and as we have already established, putting the "vz" labeled software on these phones is a copy and paste operation, not some mystically long and drawn out process.

But you can bet they're going to test and make sure it works flawlessly on their hardware.  And I think it's probably more than a simple copy and paste the way they have things tied together.  Backup assistant is tied to multiple things, verizon location services is useless to have turned on if you only use google maps since apparently it's only functional with VZ nav along with various other things.

I can't speak for you, but for me TouchWIZ was laggy, and locked up often out of the box. And I know from reading online forums outside of here, that I am not in the minority. TouchWIZ is an awful UI, and it saps the strength out of the O2.

I want to go to apple... at least I won't have to constantly wait for updates that never come. I switched to verizon because I thought they were better. I will be making a change soon and it will not be with verizon. I bought a xoom which is nice but it also needs updates! I am returning it today and dumping my cell phone for one that has an updated OS. Goodbye verizon!

Yeah, heard that they going to push out Gingerbread overseas this month. Why wouldn't they go head and make it available
to the U.S. market? Everybody can pretty much agree if we was to get Froyo then everybody would start complaining about not having Gingerbread.

For the same reason they didn't push it out to the US last October.

Because Samsung is sooooooo sloooooooow with updates that they're usually two versions behind?

My theory is Samsung had no intentions of upgrading the US Galaxy S models to Froyo, and only the recent public outcry made them start developing it. Samsung puts together greta hardware, but their software support is lackluster, to say the least.

really? lackluster software? that's why samsung's release of eclair has most of the fuctions of froyo that very few android phones got until froyo? a lot of you complaining because these phones don't have froyo have never had the chance to compare samsun's eclair to froyo fairly side by side. either that, or you just don't understand how little difference there is between the two.

if you think samsung's froyo is bad, try a motorola or htc on eclair (or cupcake, because a lot of their phones never moved past cupcake), then complain about how bad your samsung is.

Why update to Froyo?...

The Fascinate as it stands right now both software and hardware wise is very very good and I have no complaints.

But I do need the latest version of GMAIL, which requires the 2.2 version of android.

I need 2.2 so that I can install IBM Lotus Notes Traveler. Without the 2.2, I will not be able to get to my corporate email, other then that, the Fascinate is the best phone I have owned to date. Additionally, it integrates well with my Samsung 3D TV through allshare. I love this phone. I am hoping that the Galaxy tab 10.1 is better then the Ipad 2 because so far, my Samsung experience has been exceptional. knock knock knock. If it has anything less then the iPad, I will opt for the iPad.

In order to get my Lotus Notes email I set it up to automatically forward to my GMAIL account.

This works great, but if I respond to it from my phone it shows my GMAIL account as the responder.

I do have multiple email accounts set up in my GMAIL so that I can respond with a different email account.

The problem is the version of GMAIL on the Fascinate does not support replying with a different email address.

The latest GMAIL does support it, but only under android 2.2.

Good point, besides the rumors we really haven't t had an official statement explaining the delay. Getting a statement out of Verizon is like teaching a rock to talk.
