It doesn't. You're not using Verizon network when you're on wi-fi.
Your phone is set up to use either a wifi connection or VZ data plan. If you set your phone up to connect with your wifi at home, it doesnt use any of your data usage allotted for your data plan with VZ. I would certainly use your wifi when ever you have a chance. The connection is usually faster and it doesnt cost you anything extra.
