data usage is a serious problem

I am a new android user. I traded my iphone 4 for a galaxy s 3 just a few days ago. My data use with my iphone was approx. 0.6 to 1.5 GB per month. The galaxy has used over 2.4 GB (yes I meant GB) in the past 3 days!!!. My mifi has not even used 1/2 as much to run my macbook. I am not using the samsung more than my iphone. Actually, I am using it less because first I don't know how to use it and 2nd i've practicality shut down the data all together after realizing I would not be able to afford the bill. 1.28 GB was stolen by G+ that was running in the background (I didn't even know what G+ was), but even still it would use 5 GB or more per month to use this phone. I have turned off nearly all background data and usually leave the mobile data off, but this interferes with the immediate access to phone mssgs and emails that I depend on for my job. Any solutions? I am seriously considering returning it for an iphone 5.
Thanks for any help.

You may need to tweak your settings, i.e., ensure that apps are not on auto update (do those manually over wi-fi) and check your auto sync settings ... looks like you're uploading a lot of files (probably photos) to Google+ (do that over wi-fi as well).

And you can definitely set Google+ to only upload the photos over wifi in that app's settings.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Actually, I wasn't uploading anything to google plus. I don't use it at
all. I want most programs to auto sync. Of what use is a smartphone you
need to manually sync all the time? Why sync at all when I can just check
the email on my macbook if that's the solution? I need my email and
messages immediately, and if apple can do it without breaking my bank acct
why can't android? Btw, my wifi is part of my data limits with verizon as
well. Thanks for answering, though, but 2.4 gb is just too much
regardless.

@Janonmarie,
I appreciate you bringing this to the attention of our forum. I definitely want you to be able to maximize your data usage on a monthly basis. I recently moved from an iPhone 4 to iPhone 5. Both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 are LTE devices. You may see a small increase in usage from 3G to LTE. I know I did when I moved from my 3G to LTE device. Pages are able to load faster which can add additional browsing in the same time allowance.
I agree with others who have posted on the forum. You may have an application syncing in the background. When you originally signed into the device it does require a g-mail account. To ensure that Google is not set to sync. You may head into Settings > Account and Sync to review if the account is set to sync.
You may also manage data on the device through Settings > Data Usage > Limit Data Usage.
Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns towards the device and data usage.
