How do you set up the Smart Watch to interact with your Note 3?

I recently purchased the Galaxy Note 3 and also got the Smart Watch with it. I paired the devices via bluetooth, but after connecting for 2-3 seconds the bluetooth connection "disconnects." I haven't been able to use my Smart Watch. Any thoughts?

Did you pair by touching the back of your Note 3 to the back of the Gear's charger first?
