My new Galaxy 5n is asking for my "backup password, which I never was asked to make. How to untangle this?

My new Galaxy 5note is asking for my "backup password to verify your identity" (as part of setting up the fingerprint section.) I don't recall ever having set *any* passwords specifically for the new phone. Anybody have any help? Thanks.
