Please help! I'm feeling stupid and frazzled.

I need to switch my "sick" phone for the new one that just came in the mail. I have had a billion Droids, but am feeling quite idiotic at the moment. I just did a factory reset--the one that keeps all of your data, but I'm not sure if this is how I make sure that my contacts remain intact. And of course, the helpful brochure's link is optimized for a computer! I seriously want to scream and cry and adopt a 12 year old. Can someone please tell me how I make certain that my phone is backed up?

There are many ways to ensure you get your contacts and other information to your new phone.  Verizon cloud, Google, or even an app like Smart Switch by Samsung (other manufacturers each have their own version as well).

What device are you replacing? What is the replacement device?  If they are both Android and you are syncing to Google most everything should come over automatically.   In settings (depending on device) you should find Backup and reset which you can verify which Google account is used and that Backup is turned on. You should be able to login to http://contacts.google.com and see that your contacts are there and http://calendar.google.com and see your calendar.  You should be able to setup the new phone and login to Google with it and see everything appear on it if it is synced without resetting your other phone.
